Students owe Zeta Psi their assistance

October 11th, 2005
In light of the recent natural and man-made disasters around the globe, Americans are opening their hearts and their wallets to contribute to the relief efforts — and Tech students should be no different.

Specifically, we should be eager to give back to some members of our community who recently lost not only their home, but also a symbol of their fraternity and its history — the members of Zeta Psi.

Regardless of your personal beliefs about fraternities and sororities, these people are members of the Tech community and deserve our help. How would you feel if you suddenly found yourself homeless and without money to start rebuilding from the ashes of misfortune? You would want and expect your community to help you get back on your feet.

Why should Zeta Psi expect their fellow students and townsfolk to provide relief? Because they’ve given their own money, manpower and effort in providing for Blacksburg numerous times, and deserve our support in return. Many people attend their parties on a regular basis, taking advantage of their hospitality.

Consider also that instead of being able to put their money toward community philanthropy and parties that allow students to unwind on the weekends, Zeta Psi now has to divert all of its spending into rebuilding its home. That alone is an indicator of the difficult road ahead for this student organization.

So what can you do to help?

The most obvious step you can take to relieve the woes of our fellow students is to donate money. You can do this by personally giving funds to the local members of the fraternity or by attending a relief concert being sponsored by Lambda Chi Alpha, FIJI, Delta Sigma Phi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The concert, which is being held Friday night at Top of the Stairs, will feature the Shane Hines band and possibly one other band yet to be named. This is a good opportunity for students to give while simultaneously having a good night out on the town.

Other, more time-consuming, ways to get involved would be to go to Zeta Psi and offer to aid in the reconstruction effort. The members would certainly be appreciative of any help when it comes time to begin the hard work of rebuilding.

No matter who you are, you can find a way to contribute to a group that has proven itself to be a valuable member of the community. Charity begins at home, and Tech needs to look out for its own.

Let’s show Zeta Psi that it means something to us.
