Mens basketball v Coppin

New head coach for Virginia Tech, Mike Young, wins his first home game at Cassel against Coppin State, Nov. 8, 2019.

The Hokies have secured their future combo guard with the commitment of four-star prospect Rodney Rice. Rice chose to join Virginia Tech’s class of 2022 over several other schools, including the University of Alabama and the University of Louisville. According to 247 Sports, associate head coach Mike Jones’ relationship with Rice ultimately played a big role in his decision. After recruiting him to powerhouse DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, the 6-foot-4 guard followed Coach Jones to Virginia Tech.

As the Hokies’ third-highest-rated recruit ever, Rice will come in with expectations to contribute early on as a freshman. With a 247 Sports rating of 0.9792 and four-star title, Rice will try to strengthen DeMatha’s NBA portfolio and follow the likes of Victor Oladipo and many others.
