Laaser has provided play-by-play for Virginia Tech football and basketball since taking over for Bill Roth in 2015. Virginia Tech’s showing in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 29 was Laaser’s last broadcast.
“When my dad passed, I started to think about wanting to do more to help people,” Laaser wrote in his tweet. “Primarily through Mental Health advocacy.”
Laaser said he is dedicating his time toward mental health initiatives, but eventually hopes to return to the broadcast booth.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I feel at peace knowing all the good we can do,” Laaser wrote.
It is unknown yet who will take over the position in his absence.
