Jonathan Kabongo, a guard for the men's basketball team during the 2018-19 season, has been medically disqualified, head coach Mike Young announced Friday. The 6-foot-4 guard missed the 2019-20 season due to hip and back injuries.
The sophomore from Toronto, Ontario, played in a total of 21 games during his freshman year and totaled 31 points, having 12 rebounds and four assists.
Kabongo is the third player to leave the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team roster during this offseason. The Hokies now have 13 scholarships allocated for 13 players enlisted for the upcoming season. Tech is now within the required NCAA limit of 13 scholarship players per team as a result of Kabongo’s disqualification.
Kabongo expressed his gratitude toward the Hokies’ basketball program for granting him the ability to finish his college education at Virginia Tech. Kabongo plans to major in creative writing.
