Virginia Tech was recently awarded a construction contract for the renovations of Henderson Hall and construction of a new Blackbox Theatre behind the building.

Avis Construction Company will be mainly renovating the west wing, creating new rooms and offices for the music, theater and graphic design departments.

Van Coble, of Capital Design & Construction, said that the west wing was built in 1950 and used to be an infirmary. He said they are
tearing out the inside and putting music practice rooms, design studios for the graphic design department and offices for the theater department.

Coble said there are some minimal renovations being done to the  east wing as well, such as new paint and carpet. There will also be a new fire alarm system.

The Blackbox Theatre will involve all-new construction, becoming a two-story brick and glass building. The construction will take about a year and a half.

During the week of Feb. 18  fences were erected around the  area. Sidewalks around the site have also been closed because of  construction.

It's a shame that they had to cut down the trees along College Ave for this renovation
