Hikes: Higher education has changed because of Tech

Zenobia Hikes is the vice president of student affairs at Virginia Tech and has served in that capacity since 2005.

After April 16, Hikes worked with several student organizations to organize events and services for the student body. Hikes also gave several speeches during the week, most notably at the convocation at Cassell Coliseum and at the candlelight vigil held on the Drillfield on April 17.

Ryan McConnell: On April 16 this year, what will you be doing?

Zenobia Hikes: I think the first thing that I will be doing that a lot of people will be doing is reflecting. Reflecting about the day and where I was last year. I'll be supporting my students and my team. I have met with student leaders on two occasions who pulled together student groups to talk to them heart-to-heart about how they want us to help them on (April) 16, and that has been very good for me and my leadership team. There have been some concerns about the press, obviously; (the students) want to be protected and know how to respond to the press and everything. So I'll be supporting students and I'll be on campus a lot ... attending the service that morning and going around to the different events that are scheduled.

RM: One year later, what sticks out to you about April 16 and the following days?

ZH: I think the obvious is the pain ... I think it's difficult to say the one thing, but at the convocation, to be surrounded by the Hokie Nation and friends of ours. The other thing though, was being on the Drillfield for the first time. That was hard.

RM: Every day when you walk by that (Drillfield) memorial what goes through your head?
