Looking for something to do now that you've moved in on campus? Well, the folks at Student Life have thought of that for you. Each year they go through the effort to put together what is called "Hokie Hi Welcome Week." This yearly tradition occurs the week before classes every fall and is a great way for new students to become acclimated to Virginia Tech.
These events range from music shows to picnics, and the best part? Everything is free. These activities are a great opportunity to meet other freshmen and students before getting into classes. Some of these events are simple things, such as root beer floats on the quad. There is also the much-anticipated pizza-tasting competition, in which different pizza places bring their pizza on campus for you to decide who is the best.
Still, there are other events that are focused on helping new students find something to call their own. For instance, there is the Student Organization Showcase. This annual showcase brings the organizations to the new students, so you don't have to spend time trying to find them yourself. Simply show up, take a look around and see whether anything appeals to you. Student organizations are a great way to get involved and stay active in the student body.
All these events lead up to the grand finale, the Hokie Spirit Picnic in Lane Stadium. This event welcomes students to come enjoy food and entertainment in one of the most sacred places on campus - Lane Stadium. It occurs the day before classes every year and is a great way to start your semester off.
Besides all these events planned by Student Life, there are also plenty more that are right within your residence halls. Be sure to check out the bulletin boards in the halls to see what your residence advisor has planned for the hall. Each RA does things a little differently, but these events can range from poker nights to ice cream sundaes. These residence hall events are great ways to get to know the people you will be living with for the coming year.
Take advantage of the events happening during Welcome Week and meet the people you will be sharing Tech with for the next four years. Be sure to logon to the Student Life Web site (vt.edu/student_life) to see a schedule of events. Also, talk to your RA about things they may have planned for your hall.
