The XYZ student art gallery will exhibit "The Leftover Show," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Thursday, showcasing artwork left in the gallery over the years. Any students who have exhibited some of their artwork can come claim their pieces in the gallery. Whatever is left over will be auctioned off. Meredith Baber, the gallery's vice president, said the exhibition is an economical way for people interested in unique pieces to decorate their rooms.
"This is a good opportunity for students to own a piece of art," Baber said. "It's a really great organization to permit student art. It would be great for people who have never been to come."
Brian Tydings, a previously featured artist of the gallery, finds the XYZ gallery a refreshing space to show his work in.
"The students involved are very professional and creative individuals as well," Tydings said. Tydings' exhibit, titled "Five Rooms, Five Paintings," featured an eclectic melange of inspirations.
Tydings classifies his style as "West Coast meets impressionism."
"Seeing the work in the studio and seeing it on exhibit validates the work of an artist," Tydings said. "I think it is gratifying for the individual and community at the same time. (It's) not just the cultural community ... XYZ makes Blacksburg an interesting place to live."
He encourages everyone to come see an exhibit when they have the chance.
"You may not know you're into it until you go to an opening," Tydings said.
Kim Nguyen, XYZ's president, said gallery-goers should keep an eye out for art competition to come sometime this year.
"(It's) something that we've talked about but never done," Nguyen said.
