After holding their own with some of the nation's highest ranked teams, the Virginia Tech golf team finished in fifth place with a three-round total of 875 at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga., this past weekend.
The Riverside golf course, where the tournament was held, hosted fifteen teams from all over the country. Play on the par 72, 7128 yard course began Saturday morning, and continued through Monday afternoon.
In final round on Monday afternoon, the Hokies shot an 18-over-par 298, and ended the tournament just two strokes behind ACC rival and No. 10 Florida State. The Hokie squad was able to beat out No. 9 Chattanooga and several other top ranked teams when the tournament finished up on Monday.
According to the Golf World/ Nike coaches poll, eight of the nation's top 25 teams participated in the Brickyard, four of those eight being among the nation's top ten.
Coming into the last day of play, the Hokies were tied for the leading position with ACC rival Georgia Tech as well as Georgia of the Southeastern Conference. This head position came after the Hokies explosive performance during the second round on Sunday, shooting six-over-par 286, the second best out of any team in the tournament.
Senior Drew Weaver moved up and tied for second place after the second round, and was able to maintain his solid performance throughout the third and final round, only finishing one stroke behind the first place medalist Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech.
The final tournament of their fall season will be played October 24-26 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
