ACC weekend preview: Five bouts slated for Saturday

October 24, 2008 | by Matt Costello, CT Sports Reporter

NO. 23 BOSTON COLLEGE VS. NORTH CAROLINA, NOON

Both teams head into this game from opposite directions. Boston College is coming off its biggest victory of the season, defeating previously No. 17-ranked Virginia Tech, while North Carolina lost to the Virginia Cavaliers in overtime.

The ACC conference is a wide-open race as of now, so both teams need to play at their best. Both teams are ranked near the top of the conference in scoring offense, but the edge in scoring defense goes to Boston College, allowing an average of 13 points per game.

North Carolina quarterback Cameron Sexton must be able to protect the football against the Eagles' stingy defense and still produce points. In his past three games, Sexton has thrown one touchdown and three interceptions.

WAKE FOREST VS. MIAMI, NOON

The Hurricanes head into Saturday's game on a two-game winning streak, while the Demon Deacons are still recovering from a brutal beating delivered by the Maryland Terrapins in a 26-0 shutout. Miami head coach Randy Shannon needs the victory to prove to Hurricane fans that he's the man that will bring the program back to national prominence.

While Shannon looks to save his job, Wake Forest will need the win in order to stay in the race for the ACC Atlantic Division title.

The Demon Deacons must get back to their roots and become a balanced offensive attack, which will only make quarterback Riley Skinner that much more effective. Wake Forest is currently the top passing offense in the ACC, averaging 218 yards per game, but is second to last in the conference in rushing offense with only 95 yards per game.

DUKE VS. VANDERBILT, 3 P.M.

Both teams were great turnaround stories at the beginning of the year, but heading into Saturday both are coming off back-to-back losses. Vanderbilt played the No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs close, but weren't able to complete the comeback.

Duke's defense may have trouble with a Vanderbilt offense that averages 23 points per game led by quarterback Mackenzi Adams. The key to this one is whether Duke will be able to get pressure on Adams, as the Blue Devils have only totaled nine sacks on the season.

Duke's offense was able to put up 31 points on the Hurricanes defense last week and will look to continue the offensive trend in order to keep up with the Commodores.

VIRGINIA VS. NO. 21 GEORGIA TECH, 3:30 P.M.

The Virginia Cavaliers have risen from the dead with three straight wins against opponents with overall winning records, but now will face the top-ranked ACC team in the conference in the Yellow Jackets. The Cavaliers' biggest obstacle will be scoring on the Yellow Jackets fifth-ranked scoring defense at 11.6 points per game. Georgia Tech is the ACC leader in rushing offense and will be led by the dual-threat rushing attack of Jonathan Dwyer and Josh Nesbitt. Virginia's defense must stay patient and read the offense as they face the old school Wing-T offense.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE VS. MARYLAND, 3:30 P.M.

This is the type of game the Maryland Terrapins should win, but could also find a way to lose with their inconsistent play this season. The Wolfpack are ranked last in almost every offensive and defensive category and are coming into the game on a three-game losing streak. N.C. State head coach Tom O'Brien must find a way to exploit a Terrapin rush defense that currently allows 135 rushing yards per game. If Maryland quarterback Chris Turner can limit his turnovers, the Terrapins should come away with the home victory.
