I am in the popular World Regions class taught by John Boyer and the Plaid Avenger. As part of our international movie series every Wednesday night, we saw "Rabbit Proof Fence." In the movie, the white Australians decided that they're making life better for the native Aborigines by taking their children away to "move in" with white families. In the column "Pro-choice hurts women's rights" (CT, Feb 4) about how pro-choice is wrong for women, it sounds as though the author's decision mirrors Australia's views from 1900 to 1970.
Case in point, it's flawed logic to consider Aboriginals are in need of "forced help," and it's flawed logic to consider abortion as hurtful for women. Aboriginals never made the choice to be deported from their homes, and women who are raped never make the choice to become pregnant. Abortion gives women the choice that rape took away from them. And not just rape.
These millions of women receiving abortions aren't doing it for "fun" and Planned Parenthood isn't consulting young women for "profit," just as the Australian government didn't relocate Aborigines for "their own good."
To put it bluntly, abortion as "destruction for women" makes as much sense as nationally stealing children from Aborigines.
I respect your right to free speech, but I suggest that the Virginia Free Press would have been a better media outlet for this article.

WHAT makes you believe that the Virginia Free Press would accept flawed logic any more than anyone else on the planet, Jacob? I was lauding your well-written and well-reasoned article until the slanderous ending. What a shame.

1) The first article never asserted women obtain abortions for fun. 2) You are absolutely wrong. Planned Parenthood does work for profit. There are a group with incredibly racist roots, by the planting of margaret sanger. They are not ethical, and they DO make obscene profits. deny the facts all you want but we who are informed will not bow down to your lies.

Everyone - ask yourself one question. Does the pro-life movement monetarily profit from their work? Do non-abortive crises pregnancy centers make any profit? NO! Do Planned Parenthood and abortionists make profit. YES! IN fact, they make outrageously large profits! Research it! You tell me who is in it for what they believe in.

A) Only about 3% of abortions are performed in cases of rape and incest. B) The columnist was asserting the point that 750,000 of the abortions each year are female babies and that's why it's destructive to women-- something that you've completely missed.

You're right about them making obscene profits Mark. You know how much an abortion costs, its ridiculous. Planned Parenthood should be ashamed, and should offer a coupon program or BOGO Free deal. Maybe those pro-life places should provide some abortions if they aren't making money because there is obviously a market.

Well, then we should ban it. Then women can give their $ to "black market" doctors and honest doctors can go broke and get thrown out in the cold. Out in the cold with the "black market" doctors, and then becomes one of them. Look, no matter what the topic, banning things does not make them go away. So, look for ways to compromise and learn to accept reality.

You guys ever think that abortions may or may not cost so much through various organizations as a sort of deterrent to ever having to make a choice? For instance what if any given person were educated about the consequences of unprotected sex and what might occur, but also made to realize that even though abortion is an available option, it's not something you can have for free, in the monetary sense...What I'm trying to say is it's possible that if you offer abortive services as part of a coupon program, or on a 'free deal' doesn't that do more, in some ways, to further promote social irresponsibility? By further promote, I mean a society, that in some cases, refuses to go beyond abstinence only education practices, which on a personal level I believe to be incredibly irresponsible. Then you'd have an already irresponsible public running around with an increasingly excised sense of any sort of responsibility because people could suddenly throw caution to the wind with the sense of "oh I can just get it for free so why bother" In the ironic sense, if abortive services were offered for free you'd be more likely see the abortion rate skyrocket then head downward.

@Mark. Your name-calling was great - are we in junior high? This is a serious issue here. You are clearly unable to differentiate between banning something and making it stop. No law or ban can eliminate something - murder laws don't stop murder, rape laws don't stop rape, and abortion laws don't stop abortion. There is also a difference in intention that you casually overlook. Rape (and murder) is a crime of offense that has no benefit worth legalizing. Abortion, on the other hand, actually has positive effects on the whole; when a woman knows she cannot be a good mother, she's usually right.

Yea, most parents realize they are bad parents and then kill the kid before they feel guilty. Also, if the government is funding them and they are charging....why not just cut the government funding? I mean they are already receiving large profits.
