In the final match of the Tech wrestling team's 2008-09 regular season, the Hokies lost to the No. 20 Old Dominion Monarchs by a count of 19-15.
Beginning at 125 pounds, Tech's No. 14-ranked freshman Jarrod Garnett lost to his sixth-ranked opponent, James Nicholson, 5-4. Following was a 13-5 major decision over fellow freshman Brock LiVorio.
Tech's No. 17 sophomore, Chris Diaz, missed a chance to put the team on the board at 141 pounds with a 3-2 decision at the hands of ODU's sixth-ranked Ryan Williams.
Finally in the fourth round, Tech's Pete Yates tallied some points for the Hokies with an 8-4 decision over Joey Metzler, bringing his season record to 30-7. Following in his footsteps was another freshman, No. 19 Jesse Dong who scored a 6-2 decision at 157 pounds.
Although things had been looking up, their hope was squashed soon after as sophomores Matt Epperly and Anthony Trongone both lost.
Sophomore Tommy Spellman brought Tech to a rallying point with an 8-3 decision over Joe Budi at 184 pounds, but after fellow sophomore D.J. Bruce lost to sixteenth-ranked Jesse Strawn there was no coming back, even with sophomore heavyweight David Marone's pin in the last round.
Next on Tech's road is the ACC Championship, which takes place in Cassell Coliseum on March 7.
