The Hokies upset No. 21 Florida State, 2-0, on Sunday after losing a doubleheader in Tallahassee on Saturday to give Tech its first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Maroon and orange could squander only three hits in the opener while allowing a six-run third inning in which 11 Seminole players were sent to the plate. That proved to be all the scoring in a 6-0 FSU win.
In game two, Tech (14-19, 4-5) came back to tie it at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning on a Beth Walker solo shot.
Florida State, though, capitalized on a Hokie miscue in the bottom of the inning for the winning run. Catcher Amber Walker's throwing error on a pickoff sealed a Seminole (27-12, 5-4) sweep of the twin bill.
Kenzie Roark pitched 6.0 innings while giving up two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Jenna Rhodes and Whitney Davis were the only players to have multi-hit games, recording two apiece.
Roark recorded her fourth shutout of the season in a gem on Sunday, giving up just three hits and two walks while fanning four en route to a Tech victory. Although the Hokies could muster only three hits, they were timely.
After a Kristen Froehlich double and Jenna Rhode single, Erin Ota provided Tech with all the offense it would need on a two-RBI single in the third inning.
The Hokies return to Blacksburg to take on Boston College in a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m. and continue with a doubleheader on Saturday at Noon.
