Tech (10-10, 1-8 ACC) entered this past weekend facing another stretch of top 25 competition. The Hokies took on No. 18 ranked North Carolina (15-7, 5-3) and No. 9 Duke (17-3, 7-1) and wound up losing both matches by the score of 6-1.
The Hokies kicked off the weekend against the Tar Heels by falling behind quickly after losing two of the three doubles matches for the first point. The doubles pairing of senior Jessica Brouwer and sophomore Holly Johnson entered its match ranked No. 55 in the nation, but fell 9-8 (1).
The Heels continued to roll on all cylinders in the singles contests, winning five of the six matches to decide the final outcome. The Hokies' lone victory came from freshman Martha Blakely, who won by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
The Hokies' encounter with the Blue Devils didn't start off any better. In a reprise of the previous day's events, Duke opened play by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the first point.
Following the doubles sweep, the Devils went on to take five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
The Hokies may have had a disappointing weekend, but the silver lining was the lone victory Brouwer provided in the singles contests over the Blue Devils' No. 28 Ellah Nze.
The Hokies will have a break from ACC action this week as they take on Marshall on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
