2,247. That's the average number of abortions that occur each day in the United States (CDC, 2005).
The magnitude of that number indicates that abortion is a serious issue that affects many people in this country. On Monday, Right to Life at Virginia Tech erected a display of 2,247 small white flags (known as a Cemetery of the Innocents) on the Drillfield to raise awareness of the abortion issue and remember the deaths of those aborted.
A common critique of the prolife movement is that it stands against abortion but does not provide any solutions. Many women do not feel that abortion is right, but they also do not have the means or ability to care for their child. It is a tragedy that such a situation should exist in a country containing so much wealth.
By displaying flags for the aborted, Right to Life wishes to not only protest the political, social, and moral injustice of abortion, but also motivate members of the Virginia Tech community to do something positive about abortion. Here are some ideas:
Support a Crisis Pregnancy Center: These places assist women, financially and emotionally, as they face an unplanned pregnancy. Give them some diapers or donate your time (Christiansburg: 540-394-5004).Reflect: If you belong to a religion, Christian or not, offer some prayers. If you are not religious, spend some time contemplating this issue and what it means.Be a friend: Some of your peers may be going through the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy. They need you now more than ever.Organize: If you go to Virginia Tech, join Right to Life and help out. Most other colleges and communities have a prolife organization that you can join. If not, find a friend and start one.Protest: Not everything our government does is just. It is our duty to call for solutions when this happens. Attend the March for Life next year.
2,247 represents a wealth of knowledge, personalities, friendships, love, and life that our country lacks each day. Together, let us find real solutions to change this.

I support a woman's right to choose and I think men should have the right to choose whether or not they pay child support. Equal rights for both genders.

Since author likes numbers, consider the following. Assuming the rates have held fast over the last 15 years, it comes out to about 12 million abortions. That is 12 million children we do not have to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, and care for today. That is 12 million children who are not keeping families in poverty. The women who had those abortions are statistically more likely to have children who turn to crime. Family planning is instrumental to fostering strong families and successful societies.

I wish you were one of the aborted so that we could save the Earth from your pedigree.

That's not very pro-life

"I support a woman's right to choose and I think men should have the right to choose whether or not they pay child support. Equal rights for both genders." -- What the hell kind of crap is this??? Men should get to choose? Man, i almost want to laugh. Get out of the dark ages. If you want to choose NOT to pay child support, then do it by choosing NOT to poke females with your junk! Otherwise, own up and be a man.

It takes two to tango but women get all of the rights when it comes to the kid. I say if the man wants to abort but the chick doesn't than he should be able to opt out of paying child support. At the very least he should get to kick her in the belly really hard once before she has the kid.

that was way overboard there dude. i would like to see you as a chick that's pregnant and kick you in the stomach. see how you like that!

The woman shouldn't be allowed to abort a child if the father wants to keep it. It's his baby, too.

I was aborted and I'm doing fine.

What's the age cut-off for abortions? My doctor said it's not "ethical" to abort a six year old and that I was "a monster." I told him he's an idiot. Who's right?

I'm a very moderate member of the Republican party. The only reason that I consider myself a moderate member is because of the fact that I support a woman's right to choose, to a certain extent. I'm not for partial birth abortions, but I understand why women abort. In the tough economical times that most of the country is facing today, not all women can support a child. I question the group's motives when it comes their anti-abortionist views. Would they rather have a child go unnourished, beaten, and unloved? The assistance programs of today do not have enough funding to support all of the fetuses that would be born if abortion were outlawed.

Right To Life chose poorly when they selected this week to wave their little flags. Show some respect and put your soap box away for a couple days - it looks a lot like this demo was planned for publicity. Bad call.

its so nice that you've provided thousands of pre-straightened coat hangers for back alley abortions, with little white flags on top so the fetus can surrender. also, i agree with the commenters below, hoping that wednesday all those little eyesore will disappear like so many unwanted offspring.

@ Eric - yes, because the crime rate in this country has done nothing but go down since Roe v. Wade. Clearly aborting those babies has made us all so much safer. @ disappointed & adam - if you don't think those babies were lives, why should it bother you that the demonstration was the same week as April 16th? If they're just a "fetus", a "blob of tissue" or anything else that pro-choicers say, why does it upset you so? Of course the demonstration was planned for publicity - who puts on a demonstration for people to ignore?

Jochebed - For your reading pleasure : (http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=174508). Also, it would be inappropriate for any group to exploit this week to push a political agenda; whether it be pro-lifers, students for sensible drug, or students for concealed carry.

Eric, you conspicuously left gun control advocates off your list of people who shouldn't exploit this week. Was that intentional? Judging by your first post here, it seems like you're a pretty big Margaret Sanger fan. Were you aware that Sanger advocated legalization of abortion as a means of furthering the eugenics movement? The goal wasn't to free up women's lives or advance the 'my body my choice' cause - it was to head off the possibility that some kids may wind up to be less than desirable. She specifically (and famously) targeted the black population as especially needy of legalized abortions. . . .just some food for thought.

Has anyone read the section in the book Freakonomics about abortion and that crime rate? It's pretty interesting. and that line about the coat hangers and the flags for babies to surrender was pretty hilarious.

Kyle, I said 'any group', so gun control and pro-chiocers included. Maybe Sanger had some odd eugenics views, but that was pre-Holocaust days when that wasn't seen as such a bad thing. And I don't know if you are implying that she was racist, but several black leaders and newspapers supported and endorsed her efforts to bring birth control to black communities. Sanger saw family planning as a way to break the cycle of poverty in poor black communities. If people waited until they were more financially stable until they had children, then those children will have a more enriched upbringing. Sean, that book is where I got my idea from. If you liked that, I also recommend "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell.

I'm really sick of these illegals claiming citizenship rights when they haven't even been born yet. Deport them, early and often. I don't care if their tiny hands can reach things that are stuck in the toilet. They'll take jobs from the true Americans, those already born.
