Teeing off Thursday morning with Woods will be Angel Cabrera, the 2007 US Open champion at Oakmont, and Padraig Harrington, the two-time defending British Open champion and one of the highest-ranked players in the world. Harrington struggled in his last two PGA Tour tournaments, missing the cut at the St. Jude and the Memorial.
Look for Harrington to fade in this tournament and not play an important factor through the weekend.
Cabrera already claimed a thrilling Masters victory in April, but has only played in two tournaments since then, missing the cut in one of them. He typically plays his best golf when the pressure is high, so he could end up in the top 10 when it is all said and done.
Zach Johnson, who currently sits atop the FedEx Cup standings, is a very dangerous threat to win this tournament. He was two wins on the PGA Tour this season already, and the bright lights of the Open won't bother him: he already won the 2007 Masters in thrilling fashion. Johnson's ability to drive the ball accurately and hit great approach shots with his irons will keep him in tight contention.
One of the best players in golf to have yet to lay claim to a major championship, this week could be the time to break free for Kenny Perry. He has not missed a cut all season, and is one of the best drivers in all of golf. He finished 27th at the Memorial two weeks ago, and a close second in the Masters, falling to Cabrera in a playoff. Perry's consistent all-around game fits this tournament's style very well, and Perry should find himself in serious contention in the final round.
The two most important areas on the golf course this weekend are the greens and the tee boxes. Players that find themselves on most fairways and play as many holes at par as possible will have the championship in their sights.
Anyone who has heard of the sport of golf can tell you that Tiger Woods will be playing late into Sunday with a shot at the win. The players to look for joining him in the final groupings are Ogilvy, Perry, and darkhorse Anthony Kim, a dangerous young player who, if he doesn't win this weekend, will still grab several major championships before his career is over.
Tiger is the clear-cut favorite, but don't expect to see him run away with this one. He'll inch closer to Nicklaus with the victory, but he'll have to tear it out of the grasps of Ogilvy. Kick back and enjoy a weekend of some entertaining golf, everyone.
