TOPICS: shootings fort hood nidal malik hasan

A Virginia Tech graduate accused of killing 13 people and wounding another 30 at Fort Hood, Texas was not in the Tech Corps of Cadets.

A media advisory from Tech this morning said Nidal Malik Hasan graduated in 1995 with a degree in biochemistry, but was not in the corps of cadets program or any other ROTC activity.

Previous Associated Press reports stated Hasan had served in an ROTC program at Tech.

Hasan is suspected of opening fire in the Soldiers Readiness Process Center of Fort Hood, an Army base in central Texas. The death toll from the shootings rose to 13 this morning, while 30 people are injured. Hasan was shot by military police, and is in stable condition.

The suspect held an active medical license in Virginia. He had completed medical school at F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, a tuition-free school whose graduates pursue medical careers in the armed forces.

According to Tech's media advisory, Hasan attended California's Barstow Community College and Roanoke's Virginia Western Community College prior to enrolling at Tech.

Do we know if he was ever enrolled under a different name? I know some muslims take a muslim name later in life. Did he always go by his given name throughout his time at Tech?

Sorry for my ignorance (and going off-topic), but who is Jason Cho? Was that really his English name?

Jason Cho? He was the nut student who cut down dozens in a classroom on campus last year or the year before. It was in the news for weeks and weeks. If the students had had guns, far fewer would have died that day.

I agree with you, if it goes on too much longer it will be deemed the "Virginia Tech Curse" whatever it is. Maybe it's just coincidence these past few years. I hope people don't start to think we have a high population of murderers here because we don't.

I hope in the future Tech will be in the news on more positive notes.

It sure seems like we're cursed. Tech was so calm when I was a student. Last week a wise retired professor told me that the way Tech students came together after the massacre impressed the public and resulted in even more students applying to come. But now it's starting to look like we raise killers here. I know it's just the times we live in, but I remember the insane cry to allow students to carry guns into classrooms three years ago. Tech leaders have got to figure out how to make sure all our students recognize the value of life. How something so basic to our souls has been lost is unbelievable.

Tech students know the value of life, and we are good, kind people; we are not murderers. This is just a freak thing, just like 4/16. Its incredibly sad, and my heart goes out to the families, but 99.9999% of Tech students and alums are loving and caring. The incident with the two in the Jefferson Forest may not have been done by a Tech student, and the same with Morgan's kidnapping. Sadly, there are a few sickos in the world, and we here about the ones that hit home. That doesn't mean that it doesn't help elsewhere though.

I certainly did not intend to suggest that the vast majority of Tech students don't value life. Of course they do! But all it takes is one person to taint our reputation and we've had several recently. My thought was that University leaders should search for ways to highlight the great compassion of our students continually so that ALL of our students recognize the value of life. All it takes is that 0.001% who don't to hurt us again. Peace.

In the spotlight | # November 6, 2009 @ 3:14 PM — Flag Comment

These types of things occur at other places - unfortunately, VT was thrown into the spotlight after 4/16 so when it happens and VT is connected it makes national news. I think it's a coincidence that this man went to VT...I mean he graduated in '95 and has been out of Blacksburg for 14 years. It is absurd to try and connect what he did to being from Tech.

Will all due respect, I think it's too early to discount any possible connection with Tech. Just look at how his details there seem to be sketchy. It's weird, right? That the military has records indicating one thing and VT has records indicating another.

I'll bet this guy likes to eat cheeseburgers. In fact, I'll bet 99% of murderers in America like to eat cheeseburgers. There must be a correlation between cheeseburger-eating and committing murder. Every time a cheeseburger-eating America commits murder, we should blame the cheeseburger eating establishment that most recently provided him/her a cheeseburger.

Is Tech so hung up on SATs and GPAs that little attention is paid to whether the brainiacs admitted are sane? The whole person concept originated with the Greek academy, perhaps we need it in Blacksburg. At some point the number of occurences becomes meaningful.

yeah. VT should not admit people that will commit mass murders years after they are admitted to school.

We both know tech is a fantastic school. But we have three salient incidents virtually unparalleled in American academia -- two of the three (the decapitator and mass murdering gunman) were current students. They were all admitted to Tech relatively recently. The question of whether the extremely smart receive automatic admission is a valid one. The service academies for example make sure that every candidate for admission is very well rounded. Genius scores don't guarantee you admission. I suspect they might at Tech, and there are plenty of genius wackjobs.

The Law of Self-preservation is the First Fundamental Natural Law and may well be at the root of random murders and/or massacres. This basic understanding can make possible Peace Cultivation & Violence Prevention from within the mind of humanity.

When confronted by would-be criminals, unprepared intended-victims may feel physically or psychologically threatened. If and/or when the conscious ego punctures due to fear and/or danger, a window opens to the unconscious & exposes a negative energy pocket, which projects, absorbs and/or reflects negative self-images to others.

Ironically, the law of self-preservation innately compels the would-be criminal to destroy the negative self-image reflected by the unprepared intended-victim. This could be the answer to the heart-felt question "WHY" when senseless carnage takes place.

The following wording/programming generates the alpha wave shield of positive energy that can be imbedded on a subliminal level and coupled with the triggering mechanism of the conscious ego being threatened, bruised and/or punctured due to fear and/or danger.

"We share one universal mind, one humanity and one planet.
Therefore, what we do to another, we in turn do to ourselves.
And what we do to ourselves, we in turn do to others
(this wording aids in preventing suicide).
Had our circumstances in life been reversed,
Then our positions now too, would be reversed.
Let us have only love, compassion and understanding for one another, for we are all a part of each other."

Collegiate Times please clean up these posts. Most of these are either just plain stupid or completely insensitive. It is a coincidence that these things are happening. As for the comment about time, that is just plain stupid, 4/16 was NOT IN ANYWAY THE UNIVERSITIES fault. As a student at the time I am highly offended by the comments people are making here. Grow up people and start acting maturely.

The suits were brought by the families of the late Julia Pryde and Erin Peterson and allege that, despite a documented history of troubling behavior and mental health issues, the counselors failed to intervene and, therefore, failed to protect the campus community from harm.

The suits also fault Tech police and university officials for delaying a campuswide warning that a shooter might be at large. They further allege that Tech police advised the university's policy group that the first two shootings at West Ambler Johnston Hall were likely the result of a "lover's quarrel," thereby delaying response that might have prevented the subsequent Norris Hall shootings.

Yes, it did appear to be a lover's quarrel, which was a LOGICAL explanation. I was a student at the time and guess what TRYING TO SHUT DOWN A SMALL CITY (26,000 STUDENTS) IS IMPOSSIBLE IN THE TIME THAT WAS AVAILABLE. People always want someone to blame but are too stupid to realize that Cho and this sick f'er are the only people to blame.

"NOT" a Koolaid drinker | # November 9, 2009 @ 11:03 AM — Flag Comment

So if all is on the up and up let the 10 million dollar lawsuit begin for parents of children killed in the massacre?

Why are government employees immune from prosecution regarding their behavior and actions? Seems like a lot of power to give one human being over another in a free country?

And why not reopen the case by Gov. Kaine after Cho's records were discovered being hid by "mistake" by the Cook Counseling Center counselor?

Lot's of questions and few answers.

And what's the story on that "employee" that alleged brought a gun on Campus on a Sat last Aug 08and "shot himself" but didn't die? What are the facts in that case? And why is a felon being protected employee or not? He brought a gun to the campus of the worst mass shooting in history?

Need answers not kool aid.
