The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team defeated Wake Forest 1-0 in the first round of the ACC tournament Wednesday only to be shutout by the Seminoles 2-0 on Friday night in the semi-finals.

The loss was Tech’s second loss to Florida State in a week as the Hokies faced the Seminoles in their final regular season game on Nov 1.

The game was scoreless as the Hokies headed into half time in Cary, NC. Both Florida State and Virginia Tech had four shots a piece in the first half of the game.

“I thought our kids were really committed. We had zero goals against in the first half,” said head coach Kelly Cagle. “I also thought our possession was really poor in the first half but I thought our defending was really good and then I think we go more dangerous in the second half.”

The game remained scoreless well into the second half of the game until the first goal came in the 67th minute of play off the foot of Florida State forward Jessica Price.

The second and final goal came from the Seminoles in the 89th minute of the game by midfielder Amanda DaCosta.

Although the Hokies out shot the Seminoles, they failed to score as Florida State’s keepers Erin McNulty and Kimmy Diaz had a total of three saves.

“They are the No. 4 team in the country for a reason,” Cagle said. “I thought we had some good chances when it was 1-0 in the end and I think if we put one of those away it’s a different story.”

“Credit goes to Florida State,” Cagle continued. “Our kids battled, they’ve battled all season but now we get to go home, get a little bit of rest and await our NCAA bid.”

With the win over the Hokies, the Seminoles advance to the ACC Championship to face North Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m.
