The 2009 freshman class features four players who are all expected to provide depth at their respective positions at the start of the season. Come the opening tip-off, however, the most significant impact is
widely expected from guard Erick Green.
Billed as a pure point guard from Winchester, Green’s season-beginning role on the team has already very much been defined.
“Erick Green is going to be a big part to the team, not as much in scoring, but just trying to run the team and make sure we get into the right offense,” said junior guard Dorenzo Hudson.
Green comes from the famed Paul VI Catholic High School out of Fairfax, which is known for producing a slew of college basketball talent in recent years. The 6-foot-4-inch, 185-pounder led Paul VI to the state championship during his senior season while averaging 16.8 points a game.
Green, who was not available for interview because of the NCAA rule that freshmen are not allowed to converse with the media prior to playing their first collegiate game, brings a plethora of accolades with him to Blacksburg, including Washington Post All-Metro honors for the last two years of his high school career. Labeled a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, he ended up selecting Virginia Tech over George Mason, James Madison and Saint Joseph’s.
