November 19, 2009 | by Victoria James, news staff writer

The brothers of Phi Gamma Delta, also known as FIJI, will be running 157 miles from Blacksburg to Charlottesville in an effort to raise money to support the philanthropic organization, the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Brothers from both the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech chapters will run for 24 hours carrying the game ball that will be used in the football game between the two colleges on Nov. 28.

The race is set to start Nov. 27 and will commence with the brothers of the UVa FIJI chapter presenting the game ball at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville in time for kickoff.

The chapters are hoping to raise $50,000 this year, bringing their total funds raised over the last five years to $205,000. FIJI’s efforts have funded several cancer research grants and continue to spread awareness.
