Police are investigating a single-car accident where a former Virginia Tech student died in Albermarle County, Va., Sunday morning.

Benjamin Hair, a student at Shenandoah University, was alone in his car during a fatal accident on Route 20, a road that connects Charlottesville City to Orange County.

Police reports say Hair's car crashed into a tree during heavy rains. The police arrived on the scene at about noon Sunday.

Albermarle County Police Sgt. Peter Mainzer said the Route 20 road has a history of accidents, with a fatal accident occuring about every two years. He said the curvy road is often heavily trafficked with commuters into the city.

Mainzer said there is no indication that alcohol was involved.

Hair left Tech in the spring of 2009 to begin his studies at the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. He had just finished his first semester.

Mary Ann Kirkpatrick, dean of student affairs at the pharmacy school, said each class has about 75 students and Hair was well-liked by his classmates. She said he still came back to Tech for football games and to visit friends.

"He was a really nice guy, doing very well," Kirkpatrick said. "Everyone's going to miss him so much."
