Hokies United is beginning an effort to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti through a collaboration with Partners in Health.

During a conference call Wednesday, many members of the university community discussed ways to coordinate efforts to help the nation of Haiti, which was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake earlier this week.

The group determined that resources donated by the Virginia Tech community would be put to their best immediate use through PIH, a group founded by Paul Farmer. Farmer, who wrote last year's common book, spoke at Tech in April.

A Hokies United meeting will be held on Jan. 19 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Squires Student Center's Colonial Ballroom to make more detailed plans. Current fundraising ideas include donation collection points and t-shirt sales.

The group has set up a Web site for the cause at http://www.hokiesunited.org.vt.edu.

A research group from Tech and a mission group from Blacksburg United Methodist Church were in Haiti at the time of the earthquake. Both groups are safe, according to the university, but still in Haiti.

Hokies United is a student effort that was initially created following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 to help the university community respond to tragedy.
