Chipotle
After facing lengthy construction delays, the Blacksburg opening of popular restaurant chain Chipotle is back on track.
Victor Dritselis, a spokesman for Southview Development, which owns and manages the building that will house Chipotle, said he hopes the restaurant will open between April and June.
The restaurant will take up three storefronts of the building lining the 300 block of North Main Street, situating the franchise between downtown restaurants Hokie House and The Cellar Restaurant, and within earshot of rival Tex-Mex eatery Moe’s Southwest Grill.
Delays for the restaurant’s opening came in renovating the building’s architecture to meet the franchise’s design preferences and the town building code. The structure was originally built in the 1940s.
“Once we submitted the plans to the town, they had a few issues they wanted us to revise,” Dritselis said.
Dritselis said some of the problems were lowering the height of the building’s ground floor and creating appropriate entrances and exits.
The complications pushed the restaurant’s opening back from its intended debut in late 2009. One of the first tasks for construction crews was combining the three storefronts into one space.
“They demolished just about everything inside up to the walls,” said Cathy Cook, building official for the town of Blacksburg’s planning and building office.
Currently, work is being done to improve the building’s foundation.
Brandy Stanfill, a barber at neighboring Modern Barber Shop, said she hopes the new business will bring customers to her shop.
“We’d never heard about (Chipotle) until they talked about it coming here,” Stanfill said. “It should generate more business for us.”
Despite her enthusiasm, Stanfill admitted parking could become a problem.
“Everybody’s going to be fighting over parking,” Stanfill said. “Thank goodness we have our own parking places.”
In addition to the Chipotle restaurant, the building will house three upscale apartments, along with another commercial space on the building’s ground level. The back of the building will feature a patio space for the lower commercial space underneath a balcony that will be used by Chipotle.
The new Chipotle and the subsequent renovations have given new life to a building known as “the hobby shop building.”
“They’ll basically have a brand new building when they’re done,” Cook said. “It’s a perfect example of rehabbing a building and bringing it back to life.”
Ted Koebel, program chair and professor in the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, said that older buildings create a “sense of place” for communities, and repurposing these older buildings for modern use is critical to community growth.
“They (older buildings) need to be reprogrammed, they need to be brought back to some contemporary function,” Koebel said.
Cook said these upgrades are necessary to draw new tenants and businesses.
“It keeps the downtown flowing,” Cook said. “We don’t want our buildings to be ghost towns.”
Sue Drzal, administrative director of merchant association Downtown Blacksburg Inc., said the new business could bring increased foot traffic to its neighbors.
“Any time people come down to check out a new restaurant, they might also go and check out some of the other retail options,” Drzal said. “When you have a new business it’ll bring benefits to the businesses around them.”
Dritselis said he looked forward to getting the Chipotle ready.
“It should be a well received business in downtown Blacksburg,” Dritselis said.

Hooray! Another restaurant downtown! Just what we needed!

Chipotle is not "another restaurant". Chipotle has a cult following from the NOVA/BW-Corridor. It will thrive and consequently probably KO Moe's. I know down here, a chain thriving is up there with the apocalypse, but if there were even one good mexican joint in this area, then there wouldn't be a market for chipotle.
It will destroy parking, which is unfortunate. The town should raise meter rates and rake in the $$.

Personally I'm glad to see a Chipotle in town; however, there will be a lot of pros and cons to the new business. It will obviously put a huge strain on Moes which is unfortunate. I do like how it will give me and many others another reason to make downtown more of the focal point of Blacksburg, something that I feel like the town would benefit from. Other "college towns" have the downtown at the center of everything which I really like. Does anyone know if they have gotten any further deciding whether College Ave will be turned into a one way or Pedestrian only street?

Chipotle won't kill Moe's. Both have loyal followings. I know plenty who like Moe's and don't like Chipotle, and vice versa. I for one prefer Moe's because it's cheaper and offers a larger variety. Plus, Chipotle charges for chips. I mean really?

It's splitting hairs to fault one for charging for chips when the total bill is probably fairly similar. Burritos tend to cost less at Moe's, but 3 tacos cost less - even with chips - at Chipotle. For my money, Chipotle barbacoa > Moe's steak or ground beef, and Chipotle carnitas > Moe's pork. Haven't heard of many people who've had both and prefer Moe's over Chipotle. By the way, Alejandro's in C'burg trumps both...

To the above poster: Alejandro's in C'burg is absolute trash. From the food to the service, it is not worth the five miles of gas to get there.

Looks like the Yelp!ers are siding with me. 4.5/5 stars in Roanoke, 4/5 stars in C'burg. Tops among Mexican joints in either area, except El Toreo in Roanoke, which has 5/5 based on 1 review.

If the Yelp!er's only exposure to Mexican cuisine has been Taco Bell, then I'm sure Alejandro's rated high for the mere fact there are televisions on the walls. In fact, I believe BOTH reviews (nice sample size for your 4.5 stars btw!) quoted this particular feature favorably.
I would take Chipotle any day over:
Not being greeted upon arrival.
No explanation of the salsa bar or even a mention of its location.
A basket of cold tasteless chips thrown onto your table. Even Moe's keeps theirs warm.
Appetizers arriving 10 minutes after entrees with no explanation or apology.
A "Chef's Special" containing hot dog pieces rather than authentic mexican cuisine.
Enchiladas that resemble a murder scene from the measurable pool of sauce filling the plate, drowning out any taste of 'fresh ingredients'.
But please, by all means, continue thinking it's a good mexican experience and cuisine, and I'll continue saving my gas by giving my patronage to the superior offerings on Main Street, Taco Bell and all.

The limited reviews are the reason I also cited the Roanoke location. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, but I've been pleased with the tamales, green enchiladas, and drinks...Enjoy your Taco Bell.

Downtown - the central business district, a place where businesses and people gather to socialize and conduct business. Thus a R E S T A U R A N T D O W N T O W N is exactly what one not only expects, but needs.

So let me get this straight. There's blood in your underwear and you STILL keep eating there?

Dude, Have you ever had Chipotle?

I am the general manager of a business downtown and I also live 1 block away from downtown. So I spend a huge portion of my time in this area and I'm really stoked to have another good/quick food option. Chipotle is infinitely better than the "barely-one-step-up-from-TacoBell" Moe's, but it still should be no substitute for a Cabo burrito.

Yes! A good ramen place!

A real pizza by the slice place wouldn't hurt either. Seriously, if you know someone that can cook a good pie, make it happen. You could make a killing selling slices to everyone coming out of the bars at night. I know I'd buy.

Dude, I don't know anyone who likes Moes over Chipotle. You have got to be insane if you think that. I know people that like Moes, but they would like Chipotle even more. I remember when I was in high school, I'd always want to go to Chipotle, get two burritos, and just crush it. And every time I'd go home during breaks, I'd get Chipotle at least once. I can't say the same for any other restaurant really...
