Virginia Tech Police Department remains confident that the e-mail threats circulating through the Tech community continue to orginate in Italy.

The Tech policeissued an e-mail to the Tech community Friday afternoon to remark on the threatening messages circulating in the past two weeks via e-mail and YouTube, with the most recent suggesting that Thursday, March 18 would be a potential day of action.

"Law enforcement officials have been, and remain, very confident that the threats have contunued to originate in Italy and that the person responsible is not in a position to be a danger to the university community," the e-mail said.

The e-mail also said that Tech police Deputy Chief Gene Deisinger confirmed that no incidents were reported Thursday on campus. No new related messages have been reported to the police since March 17.

Previous messages had been found on YouTube and also sent to the personal e-mails of individuals on campus. President Charles Steger had sent a campuswide e-mail Wednesday acknowledging the rumors circulating around the online threats. It also touched on circulating e-mails regarding breaks-ins that have alledgedly occured in Blacksburg apartments.

“People are linking local events, such as alleged break-ins, with these threatening posts and e-mails, which are not borne out by the facts. All the indicators reviewed by law enforcement do not point to an immediate threat,” Steger’s e-mail said.

"The messages have been disruptive to our community and have resulted in understandable concern for our safety and security," the Tech police e-mail said. It also said that the university and police department continue to work closely with state and federal enforcement agencies to resolve the situation.
