Thunderstorm watch postpones graduation ceremony

May 14, 2010 | by ct news staff

Because of forecasted hazardous weather conditions, university commencement exercises have been postponed by one hour.

There is currently a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. tonight. The National Weather Service has included Montgomery County among the 24 affected areas.

Information about the delay was issued to Virginia Tech students via e-mail, text messages, and desktop alerts through the VT Alert system.

All graduates were asked to report to Cassell Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. to receive instructions.

The graduation ceremony, originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. this evening, will “tentatively” begin at 8:10 p.m. with the academic procession and the ceremony will begin at 8:30, according to the alert e-mail. Currently, the ceremony will still be held in Lane Stadium.

The e-mail announcement further encouraged students and guests to “exercise caution” and “not enter Lane Stadium until after the severe weather has passed.”

There are currently cloudy conditions in Blacksburg.
