The University of Virginia announced today to its football season ticket holders that fewer Cavalier fans than usual have purchased tickets for the annual U.Va.-Virginia Tech football game.

Craig Littlepage, athletic director for U.Va., wrote in an e-mail to season ticket holders that after allowing donors to the Virginia Athletics Foundation to order tickets to the Tech game as part of the football season ticket application, the school has 1,000 extra tickets.

“This usually results in a sellout of our ticket allotment for the game,” the e-mail said.

Littlepage attributed the leftover tickets to the fact that this year’s game will be played in Blacksburg on Nov. 27.

The e-mail said the extra tickets would not be made available to the general public.

“Instead,” Littlepage wrote, “we have expanded the offer of tickets for the Virginia football game at Virginia Tech to all VAF donors, current and past season ticket holders, and mini-package purchasers until the supply of tickets is exhausted. If we are unable to sell the remaining tickets to our loyal fans, unused tickets will be returned to Virginia Tech to be sold through its ticket office.”

Littlepage encouraged U.Va. fans to purchase the extra tickets to “reverse this trend” of Tech fans purchasing tickets in the U.Va. section of Scott Stadium at past games at U.Va.

“It’s important that only Cavalier fans have access to our allotment of tickets,” the e-mail read.

“A number of our fans have voiced their concerns about this and have written to me and others within the Athletics Department,” Littlepage wrote. “The first opportunity to begin to reverse this trend is to make sure we have strong support for our team in Blacksburg this season. It’s up to all of us to help make this happen.”

They are not able to sell tickets to the football game because there is this thing called the recession going on.
The real unemployment rate is 20%, people have lost their homes and can't feed their children.
Football attendance declines when you can't feed your children. Report more about things that matter, eh?

So using your logic the Ct should just get rid of the sports section altogether? That they should only report about things that are important to you? Lighten up, eh?

So, all of those rich, snobby UVA fans aren't buying tickets to the VT game because of the recession? Seriously? What a terrible excuse, the recession. Think before you open your mouth and say something stupid.

They haven't sold their allotment because UVa fans know their football team is going to gets its backside kicked up and down the field at Lane Stadium.

The CT is a little behind the curve on this one. The e-mail went out on TUESDAY afternoon and all 1000 tickets were sold to UVA fans in less than 2 hours, making this a non-story.

I doubt Littlepage is an idiot, but his statements are not rational. This game has been on the same weekend for at least the past 10 years. Attributing the lack of sales to the date is disingenuous. Also, it's pretty tough to call it "reversing the trend" of VT infiltrating the UVa section at Scott. We sell out our allotment AND seep into their sections, whereas he has to beg UVa fans to at least buy their own allotment at Lane.
