Student move-in from today, Aug. 18, until Saturday, Aug. 21, will cause changes in traffic and parking in and around the Virginia Tech campus.
During this time, various streets and parking lots will be reserved only for students moving into the residence halls. These areas will be “30 minute unloading zones” and include Owens, Dietrick, Cassell Coliseum, Hutcheson and Engel/Harper parking lots. Old Turner Street, Kent Street, Washington Street, Ag-Quad Lane and the south side of the Drillfield are also designated “30 minute unloading zones.” Parking is prohibited in these areas and all vehicles found parking will be ticketed.
Washington Street will become a one-way road during these days. Traffic may only travel from west to east, from Cassell Coliseum toward downtown Blacksburg. This area will be heavily congested so use of Washington Street by through traffic is discouraged.
Faculty and Staff are asked to park in the C/G section of the Litton-Reeves Lot or the Perry Street/Prices Fork Lot.
The Blacksburg Transit will also be working on an alternative schedule. Buses will run as part of the regular service, but detours will occur on CRC Shuttle, Harding Avenue, Hokie Express, Tom’s Creek, Two Town Trolley and U-Mall Shuttle routes.
All stops on the south side of the Drillfield will be closed along with Spring Road, Newman Library, Washington Street between West Campus Drive and Kent Street.
The BT made changes to many of their routes over the summer. Tom’s Creek B is now called University City Boulevard, and University Mall Shuttle is now U-Mall Shuttle. A Progess Street route and a University City Boulevard route were added to the service schedule. In addition, Tom’s Creek A, now Tom’s Creek, was altered along with the timecheck on the North Main Street route.
Construction on Main Street may also cause traffic problems and congestion when navigating downtown Blacksburg and around the campus.
