Virginia Tech wide receiver Dyrell Roberts will miss the remainder of the regular season because of compartment syndrome in his left thigh.
The junior from Smithfield, Va. suffered a thigh bruise on the first kickoff return during Thursday night’s home victory against Georgia Tech, and after returning briefly missed most of the second half. Roberts underwent emergency surgery Friday morning and will remain in the hospital for several days, according to head athletic trainer Mike Goforth. Additionally, he will have a second surgery performed Sunday.
Goforth indicated Roberts may miss Tech’s bowl game, but has not ruled out the possibility he could play.
Roberts has 21 catches for 303 yards and two touchdowns this season and averages 19.4 yards on 16 kick returns. He had a breakout game against Duke earlier this season, when he posted six catches for 134 yards.
Roberts is also second on Tech’s all-time kickoff return yards list.
