Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Seth Greenberg announced Wednesday freshman forward Jarell Eddie has been suspended for the remainder of the 2010-2011 season.
Eddie will not dress or play for the remainder of the season due to an incident that occurred on Feb. 15, according to the release. Eddie was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana according to Montgomery County General District Court records in Blacksburg, V.A. on that date.
“Jarell Eddie is a excellent student, a fine young man and a great teammate,” Greenberg said in the release. “He made a mistake in judgment and is paying the price for that mistake.”
Eddie was averaging 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 10.9 minutes per contest. Tech is down to just seven scholarship players heading into the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. on Thursday after season-ending injuries to Dorenzo Hudson, JT Thompson, and Cadarian Raines as well as a heart condition that sidelined transfer forward Allan Chaney.
Eddie also had academic issues earlier this year, and played sparingly following a Jan. 25 loss on the road to Georgia Tech because of a “failure to live up to my academic expecations,” Greenberg said after the game.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Eddie was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and was the No. 70 rated class of 2010 prospect in the nation according to Rivals.
The No. 6 seeded Hokies will look to regroup against No. 11 seed Georgia Tech in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. Tip-off is at 9 p.m. and the game will be televised on the ACC Network.
