The first day of the ACC Tournament is in the books and while for the most part there were few surprises, one game in particular left college basketball fans stunned.

No. 9 Miami 69, No. 8 Virginia 62

In what was a lackluster game up until the final 42 seconds, the Miami Hurricanes stormed from 10 points down with 42 ticks remaining and beat the Virginia Cavaliers 69-62 in overtime. Hurricanes guard Malcolm Grant led all scorers with 16 points on four of 16 shooting including three of 11 from beyond the arc. Virginia guard Mustapha Farrakhan had 14 points and Sammy Zeglinski added 13. Amazingly, Miami missed 17 of its first 19 shots through the first 19:18 of the game. However, the Hurricanes scored the final 10 points in regulation and Virginia leaves Greensboro with one of the most heartbreaking losses in program history.

No. 5 Boston College 81, No. 12 Wake Forest 67

Wake Forest can only hope to forget the 2010-2011 season. The Demon Deacons capped their worst season in program history with a defeat at the hands of Boston College, 81-67 in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Boston College had three players score 20 or more points as Joe Trapini had 22, Corey Raji added 21, and Reggie Jackson led all scorers with 27 points. Wake Forest forward Travis McKie led the Demon Deacons with 16 points on seven of 10 shooting and was one of the few bright spots for his team.

No. 7 Maryland 75, No. 10 North Carolina State 67

The Wolfpack appeared disinterested for much of the game, and while a late rally fizzled, it appears as though the Sidney Lowe era in Raleigh is on life support. Maryland shot 44.8 percent from the field, and Jordan Williams had 16 points along with 13 rebounds to lead the Terrapins in scoring and rebounding. NC State’s Tracy Smith, who has been bothered by a knee injury all season, did not start the game but led the Wolfpack with 14 points.

No. 6 Virginia Tech 59, No. 11 Georgia Tech 43

The Hokies soundly beat Georgia Tech in their opening ACC Tournament game. After finding out freshman forward Jarell Eddie was suspended for the remainder of the season, Tech was left with seven scholarship players and doubt as to whether they could beat the lowly Yellow Jackets. Nonetheless, the Hokies proved the critics wrong and despite a sore left ankle Jeff Allen contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds. Malcolm Delaney led all scorers with 15 points on four of seven shooting. Glen Rice Jr. led the Yellow Jackets scoring attack with 14 points, but as a team they shot just 32.1 percent including five of 23 from three-point range.
