Blacksburg Police have arrested Virginia Tech football player Xavier Boyce and 20-year-old Olivia A. Hutchins on charges of child endangerment.

According to a release from Blacksburg Police Department, the two were arrested Thursday following an investigation into injuries sustained by their infant child on Jan. 31, 2011.

The pair were taken in on charges related to cruelty and injuries to their child.

Boyce and Hutchins were released on a $5,000 unsecured bond, and a court date is pending.

Boyce, a redshirt sophomore split end, missed four games during the 2010-2011 football season due to a knee injury.

Hutchins is listed on the East Carolina University athletics department website as a member of the school’s track and field team.

Both Boyce and Hutchins went to Landstown High School in Virginia Beach.

A version of this article appeared in the Mar 25 issue of the Collegiate Times.

Great. The police no doubt helped CPS steal their kid too. Now instead of tripping and getting hurt (or whatever ridiculous "endangerment" complaint led to these charges), the kid will be molested at the hands of pedophile foster parents who work for the state. This country sucks.

I don't need to know all the facts. It is NEVER okay for the government to steal a kid from the parents. If the government stole this kid, then that makes a bad situation worse.

I'm pretty sure there isn't nearly enough info in this article to come to that judgement.

is that chick serious? you can't just say that's what's going to happen to the baby. my family and I are a foster family, and I can guarantee 100% that the country does not suck, we're not "pedophile foster parents," and the only reward we get for helping these children is knowing they're having a better life, a life they deserve, for the time being. the goal of fostering isn't to take the children away forever, but until the parents get back on track with their own lives to give their children what they deserve.
Shelly, "ignorance is bliss",right? until you find out you got it all wrong

Yes, I am serious. Just Google one of these terms: "foster parents rape kid," "foster parents abuse kid," "foster parents molest kid." Have fun reading the horrendous articles. The most dangerous place for a kid to be is in the care of the state. The state does not give a crap about our well being. If you think government is benevolent in its actions you are sorely mistaken.

P.S. you get more the "reward of knowing we helped some kids." Chances are you get a crap ton of money. I've seen ads in the NRV Current advertising as much as $1,300 per month per kid to be a foster parent.

Shelly sweetie if you just go off of what the internet says I feel bad for you. Yes there are horrible cases of abuse but most foster homes aren't abusive. Also if you have such strong feelings against the states care for these children do something about it or shut up. And the money is to help the children and foster parents are loving people who are providing these children with a safe place to live. Also seeing as this incident occurred in January and the arrest was not made till recently I am going to have to say they looked into the issue and there must have been true abuse not a child tripping.

Actually, Shelly, if you read the whole release you would see that the child suffered "internal head injuries requiring medical treatment" not to mention, medical treatment was not sought but rather left for the social worker to find while doing an inspection (which was brought on for this very fear). So stop defending halfwit parents by stating that they're better in the hands of someone who would allow a head injury and just let it be rather than a government entity where it can find a home that cares.

I have worked as a paramedic for the last five years, and during that time, I have had to deal with several cases involving child and elder abuse. It's absolutely disgusting to see how some people treat those who depend on them. Being placed in foster care may not be ideal, but it is far better an option than leaving a defenseless child in the care of people who could not care less.

ACTUALLY, you sound rather dumb because they found the injury when the parents took the child to the pediatrician because they thought she was ill. The media took this story and ran with it just because a Tech football player was involved. I know these two kids and they are excellent people. Just two kids trying to do the best and raise their kid while still attending school. Whatever the reason for the internal bleeding, I can assure you WHOLE HEARTEDLY it was not abuse.

Are you telling me a VT football player committed a crime? And he's a black Virginia Tech football player from the Tidewater area? And he has a kid but isn't married to the mother? And apparently he's not up for father of the year?

How utterly surprising.

This was by far the best comment. Although the Shellie person is stupid and should be told so, I would much rather thank you for your observation. I laughed for a while.

You're welcome.

Here's a suggestion - take mugshots of all black VT football players from the Tidewater area the day they report to football camp as freshmen. It'll save the local authorities a lot of time.

Dont be a douche by bring race into it. Your point was well taken (and kinda funny) without the reference to him being black. Just sayin...

Lee Hawkins - the reference isn't spurious. Just take a look at how many BLACK VT football players from the Tidewater area have made the crime blotter in the last five years or so.

I'm not saying its causation or correlation, but you can't deny that the connection exists. Our football players are a bunch of thugs.

Jacque - I'd be more of a fan of our football program if the players behaved themselves and didn't act like a bunch of savages off the field.

Date r@pe, drug usage, gun possession, dog-fighting, and now child endangerment. An awful lot of crimes and misdemeanors by a very small group of students.

And yes - the overwhelming majority of VT football players who make the crime blotter are black and from the Tidewater area.

PEOPLE, please get ALL of the facts before placing judgement. One of the major problems with the world is that the MEDIA has so much control over our lives. This is ONE side of the story, theirs has yet to be released. These kids are both in school, both athletes, neither have a record, they were raised in a good town (Virginia Beach), lets just wait until ALL of the facts come out before we start talking bad about two kids. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?
