Students have a variety of ways to stay safe on campus.
All across Virginia Tech’s campus are brown poles with blue lights at the top, known as the blue light system. There is a button and intercom on the pole that students can use in case of emergency.
Students can speak to a police officer through the intercom and within minutes security will be on the scene.
The Virginia Tech Police Department encourages also women to take Rape Aggression Defense Systems, a 12-hour, female-only class.
Students who are interested should contact Officer Marshall Hamilton at (540) 231-6411.
When there is a campus-wide emergency students are notified through a system called VT Alerts.
The system sends a message to an @vt.edu email addresses. Additionally, students can opt to have text message notifications sent to their cell
phones.
Another security measure available to students is the Safe Ride service on campus.
The service will take students anywhere on campus that they need to go.
Safe Ride is a great option for students who do not feel comfortable by themselves late at night on campus or walking at night from a parking
lot.
Students can reach Safe Ride at (540) 231-7233 (SAFE) or the VT Police at (540) 231-6411 with any questions.
