During orientation, incoming freshmen and transfer students will receive a very important piece of plastic called a Hokie Passport. This card will serve as your student identification for all four — if not more — years that you are a student at Virginia Tech. It will help you enter your residence hall, buy meals on campus in all dining halls, purchase some items on and off campus at the bookstore and some downtown businesses, participate in intramural sports, attend varsity sporting events, ride the bus, check out library books, use the Math Emporium and work out at the gym. Here are some questions and answers that will hopefully be of some use to you in understanding just how important your Hokie Passport really is.

WHAT IF YOU LOSE YOUR HOKIE PASSPORT?

You should first deactivate your Hokie Passport if you have actually lost it. You can do this by going to my.vt.edu. You can also deactivate your Hokie Passport by calling the Hokie Passport Office at 540-231-5121.

If you suspect your card was stolen, immediately report it to the Virginia Tech Police at  540-231-6411.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD MONEY, HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT DOING THAT?

You can add money either at the Hokie Passport office in the Student Services building or online using an eCheck or credit card. If you decide to add money to your flex plan online, simply go to my.vt.edu and click on the “Personal Info” tab at the top of the screen. You can also add money to your account using “cash to card” machines located around campus in several dining halls and Squires Student Center.

I HAVE HEARD ABOUT FLEX DOLLARS ROLLING OVER TO THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER, IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THIS?

Yes, this is true. However, there is one little wrinkle. If you have money left on your card after summer/fall semester, the money will roll over to spring semester assuming either a Mega Flex Plan or a Major Flex Plan was purchased. All money on your meal plan must be spent by the end of spring semester. Dining dollars will also carry over from each semester until you graduate.

DO YOU NEED YOUR HOKIE PASSPORT TO USE THE BUS SYSTEM ON AND AROUND TECH’S CAMPUS?

Following on the theme of my last post regarding Rosh Hashana, lets talk about Yom Kippur (the Day of Attonement). It is the conclusion of the High Holy Days that started the previous week with Rosh Hashana. Without a doubt, this is the most important of all Jewish holidays bar none. As the saying goes, "On Rosh Hashana, the Book of Life is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed". On a less metaphysical level, the changes to ourselves we start thinking about on Rosh Hashana we commit to do with Yom Kippur.<a href="http://namechangeonpassport.org/">name change on passport/a>
