Logan Thomas had another big day for Virginia Tech, taking part in all three of the Hokies’ touchdowns en route to a 24-21 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night.

“You never want to get down on yourself,” Thomas said in response to his improvement from the beginning of the season. “That’s kind of what I’ve learned about myself and about this team. We’re not gonna get down on ourselves, we’re going to keep battling no matter what.”

It was just another impressive performance from a guy who is quickly becoming one of the conference’s best quarterbacks.

“What I like about Logan is I think he takes care of the ball,” said Frank Beamer, head coach. “He’s in control, even though they rushed us a couple times and he had to leave the pocket, he doesn’t do crazy things with the ball.

“There’s a lot to be said for that. I think he continues to be a good leader. I think his poise rubs off on other guys.”

After fumbling on the game’s first play, which led to Carolina’s first score of the night, Thomas came back strong with a 19 of 32, 195-yard, two-touchdown effort to lead his team to its eighth straight 10-win season. He also ran for a 23-yard touchdown early in the third quarter.

“Logan’s made some big ones for us — the touchdown run,” Beamer said. “Like I said, he takes care of the ball, he’s in control. He’s to the point now where I think he makes people around him better. I’m proud of him. Proud he’s our guy.”

After the Tar Heels went up 7-0 just one minute, eighteen seconds into the game, the Hokies scored 24 unanswered points to take a commanding lead, one they almost came close to losing late in the game.

“I give North Carolina credit,” said Beamer. “I think they hung in there, and they battled, and played tough. I think we had a couple things not like Virginia Tech football. First play, we have the mess up in alignment and fumble, and give them momentum right away.

Man, they beat the TAR out of UNC. North Carolina never stood a chance!

That was THE coldest game I have ever been too. Lots of people left before the end of the game.

I'm worried about the defense as a unit. They seemed to have gone home in the last 7 minutes of the game. That last touchdown by UNC show that Foster's boys had completely lost focus. From the start of that UNC drive, the defense was looking at each other and not at UNC. They seemed to have forgotten that UNC had the ball and needed to score quickly and were moving to do so. If ever there was a time to call timeout, that was it. Someone needed to get their collective heads back into the game. In the end, Tech didn't beat UNC, UNC ran out of time. Way to be a no show defense.

The defense was not good in the 4th, but they shouldn't have been on the field. The offense needs a killer instinct to put teams away in the 4th instead of changing the game plan away from what works. If two slow-developing run plays and a screen don't get you a first down in the first three quarters, that's not the way to milk the clock to win the game. Be aggressive and take the game.

That stupid bubble screen play we call every year (Stinescreen) was called like 5 or 6 times and only once did it get more than 4 yards. Is Ocain just using the same play methodology or what? It's obvious we're just relying on the athletic ability of Wilson and Thomas to make plays. We really have no true offensive scheme or signature. One of these seasons when we're lacking talent it's going to give us a 7 win season.
