Alumni Mall was temporarily closed earlier tonight after a suspicious package was reported to police.
At 6:55pm, a community member reported the unattended suitcase to a Blacksburg Police officer working at Steppin' Out. The Alumni Mall area was then closed to all traffic.
Virginia State Police resources were brought in to help investigate the suitcase.
A bomb dog sniffed the suitcase but did not alert officers that it contained explosives. The suitcase was then imaged by state police, who found nothing suspicious.
Officers who opened the suitcase determined that it contained women's clothing and other assorted travel items. The suitcase is now being treated as a lost-and-found article by the Virginia Tech Police.
The protective steps were taken "out of an abundance of caution after recent events in Blacksburg over the past few days, and recent nationwide events of the past few weeks," said Gene Deisinger, deputy chief of Virginia Tech Police.
Alumni Mall has been reopened to all traffic.
