Letter from Coach Greenberg
Friday, February 22, 2008; 12:00 AM
I cannot describe how angry and embarrassed I was with our play versus UNC …

Now, having said that, I can express how proud I was with our resiliency to bounce back, go on the road, get down early and grind our way to a win against a very good Maryland team.

The win at Maryland puts us at "plus one" with three home games remaining. The road to the NCAA Tournament might have hit a detour in Chapel Hill, but the win at College Park has given us a new direction, energy and enthusiasm.

During the next two weeks, we have an opportunity to improve ourselves in regards to the league. It starts Saturday at 2 p.m. versus a very talented Georgia Tech team. We need Cassell at its very best on Saturday. Please remember to wear your black and red in support of our friends at NIU. This display will be another example of how we can support them in their healing process by our actions and also show how we have persevered.

If you are a season ticket holder and cannot make the game due to other commitments, please get your tickets into someone else's hands. Even though you can't be there, that act will be another example of your support. This weekend is "Hokie Celebration Weekend" and we have had great success on this weekend in recent years.

Please remember it's all about our working together to build a program. It's about passion. It's about creating a winning culture, attitude and atmosphere. You are difference-makers for our team. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Seth Greenberg
men's basketball coach

Posted by: Chris at Feb 28 First, get your facts straight, the jet ski thing was indeed an Orange Bowl sponsored event. Second, if you even watched the bowl game, you'd know the individual players made very few mistakes, the play calling was out right miserable. Finally, if you've got nothing better to do then trash the football program when the basketball coach does something meaningful and feel your Alumni support is waste, then maybe you're the fool. Give up your donation, I'll move up one more spot! Way to go Seth! Flag Abuse
Posted by: eikoh at Feb 24 On Mr. Woods comment: they sure as hell played like they were hungover, drunk, stoned, tripping, etc.., The coaches made calls that would make one assume they were doing the same thing!! Flag Abuse
Posted by: Dave C at Feb 23 This is a basketball letter and you folks are talking about football. Get over it! Anyone that knows anything about VT athletics can't possibly be surprised about the bowl game loss - it's standard practice for our football team. Coach Greenberg has finally brought some excitement to Hokie basketball and some of you are still harping on the end of the season let down for football. It happend almost every year and will continue to happen unless the coaching staff learns how to be big-time. On the contrary, the basketball team can actually put away close games - on the road. Pour your attention into Cassel, and hopefully the folks in Lane will take notice. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Hokie Alum at Feb 23 Bigger and better than ever at WHAT COST? I am sure no one will say they aren't enjoying the success of our football team, but they still find a way to embarrass the school time and time again. And after alumni throw thousands of dollars toward the program every year, it's like spitting in their face. They go to school for free and get to do what they love so why can't they just stay out of trouble. Don't even try and say it's isolated incidents because there are 10 + players that have been involved in some sort of scandal just in the past year. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Dave Woods at Feb 22 Vince was apparently injured at a planned event, not some reckless "partying". Do you think the Hokie football staff and team were just senselessly goofing around the whole time? Absurd. These people live and breathe everything they do to win games and build a program. One approach has been to enjoy bowl games as a reward to the players while also keeping the players loose and fresh. This time we lost a game. Sometimes the other teams score more points -- it happens. It doesn't necessarily have to be an occasion to lay blame and trash the players and coaches, does it? Have you noticed our football program is bigger and stronger than *ever* and still improving? Can you enjoy that? I'm glad I can. Smell the freakin' roses. Flag Abuse
Posted by: jay at Feb 22 Hey Coach Greenberg, Maybe you could talk to some people at the ticket office to tell them to keep the ticket windows open after 4:00, say 9-6 PM. Many students work on top of school, and the 2-day window of 9-4 for claiming your tickets for 3 games is B.S. I'm I die hard fan, however, I've missed the window twice this year!! What about the hundreds of other collegiate and professional sporting, music, etc. events that do online tickets? All they have to do is scan the barcode!!!!! Flag Abuse
Posted by: HokieGal at Feb 22 The VT football players were NOT out partying in Miami. Vince was hurt at a Orange Bowl sponsored event. Get your facts straight!! Flag Abuse
Posted by: dave at Feb 22 Beamer and Greenberg are both great, exceptional coaches. Think about it, it is a lot easier to handle the number of basketball players: basketball has 14 players on the roster.... football has over 100! Flag Abuse
Posted by: TG at Feb 22 Well, Vince Hall, for one was out riding a jet ski and that's how he hurt his knee. Should he be allowed to ride a jet ski while in Miami? Maybe, but before a big bowl game, probably not the best idea as you can get hurt, like he did. And it was widely reported by the sports commentators down there that Kansas practiced wayyyy more than we did before the game. Here are two articles saying how Vince hurt his knee on the jet ski if you need "proof" http://www.inspin.com/Sports/NCAA-FB/vince-hall-virginia-tech.html This one goes back and forth on whether he hurt it on a jet ski, but come on... bruised it playing in the ocean? http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/virginia-tech-player-injured-by-jet-ski-15279 Anyway google it and there are plenty of stories saying he hurt it on a jet ski. Posted by: Jason T at Feb 22 I still have yet to see any verifiable accounts of the football players partying in Miami. What am I missing? Many have alleged this, yet none have offered proof. Flag Abuse
Posted by: TG at Feb 22 So far, no players have gone to jail, but some have been criticized for their behavior on court and have made VT basketball look bad. Just the fact that Greenberg takes time to write these letters says a lot though. I've never seen one from Frank Beamer, but he does thank the fans a lot and says how great we are in Lane Stadium. I think Beamer has less control over his players than Seth Greenberg i.e. Miami Orange Bowl and some of the players out partying it up. Flag Abuse
Posted by: bxl at Feb 22 how bout the players-not-going-to-jail standard? Flag Abuse
Posted by: Jason T at Feb 22 Let me point out that I am not out to criticize Greenberg. He has done a remarkable job with our basketball team in a relatively short time. I am happy that he signed an extension, and I always look forward to watching VT pull of a few big upsets each year on their way to becoming a better program. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Jason T at Feb 22 Mike, Seth Greenberg is certainly a stand-up guy, but a 100% better coach than Beamer? By what standard? Flag Abuse
Posted by: Mike at Feb 22 Seth Greenberg, you are my hero. Greenberg is a 100% better coach than Frank Beamer. I wish more people would realize that Flag Abuse
