Branden Ore, Virginia Tech's junior running back, has run his course as a Hokie. As of Wednesday morning Ore was dismissed from the football team by head coach Frank Beamer.

"During recent meetings with Branden Ore, we have decided that it would be best for Branden to pursue other opportunities," Beamer said.

Despite a standout performance as a sophomore, Ore entered the 2007 season at the bottom of the depth chart due to missed practice time. Coaches also said that he had returned to campus in August out of shape. Ore's name floated up and down the depth chart the entire season amid poor performances riddled by injuries. His most notable departure was his first quarter suspension during the Orange Bowl for showing up late to a team practice.

During the turbulent parts of his career, sophomores Kenny Lewis and Jahre Cheeseman replaced the starter at the tailback position. Now that Ore is out, Lewis, Cheeseman, redshirt freshmen Darren Evans and Josh Oglesby and 2008 letter of intent signee Ryan Williams, will be battling for the starting spot in the this upcoming year.

Last season, Lewis ran 57 times for 205 yards gained and four touchdowns. Cheeseman contributed to one touchdown from 21 plays and 133 yards, including the longest rushing play of the season for 70 yards against Georgia Tech. Williams, who will join the team in August from Stone Wall Jackson High School in Manassas, ran for 1,574 yards and 22 touchdowns his junior season, and 640 yards and 7 touchdowns his senior season despite missing three games. Williams was one of the most highly touted recruits in the nation, listed as the No. 2 player in the state and No. 47 in the country by Rivals.

Ore, whose explosive running style at times invigorated a lackluster offense, was considering the possibility of dropping from Tech early to enter the NFL draft this year, eschewing his senior season. According to associate director of athletic communications Bryan Johnston, Ore had been in communication with an agent, but later announced he would be returning to the Hokies for a final year of eligibility.

Posted by: Hokie Respect at Mar 25 Branden Ore had more potential than almost any running back thats played here at Tech. His lack of discipline has showed so many times I am happy to see him going. Last year he missed summer workouts which showed in the early season and then was suspended by the team during the first quarter of the Orange Bowl. He never understood what playing for Tech is all about, Hokie Respect Flag Abuse
Posted by: hokie01 at Mar 24 well, we could go on and on about the coaching style.. but the lack of a creative offense isnt anything new since stinespring took over... we have never been incorporated the basic plays into our offense to make us multi-dimensional. for instance, the quick dump off to the RB.. the screen to a RB... get my point?? any pass plays to the RB.. we don't do it -- ever! the only way you can beat teams that blitz (or at least make them stop) is to kill em with quick dumps to the RB. my .02 cents, peace! Posted by: Seaman at Mar 24 I've noticed a change in offense since Glennon became the Qb after Marcus. I doubt it if I've seen Glennon do a Play Action pass. The offense used to do it a lot before but the master mind of Brian Stinespring thinks that part of the playbook shd be ripped out for Sean. VT's Playbook has remained fairly the same every year besides the reverse run on return (which we saw this year) and that one reverse run by Imoh when NC State sacked Randall in 04. Probably not becos of creativity but teams have gotten used to the same hand off and deep pass. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Kyle Minor at Mar 20 Ore's ineptitude at running back last year wasn't Stinespring's fault. Stinespring isn't ever going to be confused with an offensive mastermind, but when he's stuck with a playbook that involves play after play of handing a ball to an overweight slacker who has no work ethic and no sense of pride in himself or his team, I can't say all the blame ought to be placed on him. Good move by Beamer to release Ore - we have plenty of RBs who work harder, play better, and care more than he ever did. Flag Abuse
Posted by: keth at Mar 19 why won't beamer release stinespring so that he may pursue other opportunities? i would absolutely love to see him coordinate the offense of any other acc school, especially uva Flag Abuse
Posted by: Sean Glennon at Mar 19 Guys don't worry. Seriously my arm is a cannon. I will take us to the promised land next year. Hell we don't even need a running back, I can run the ball, I can throw the ball to myself if I have to. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Fred at Mar 19 So I guess he is going to stay at Tech to finish up his degree? Or is he a student at-lete, now that his career is over, he is going to follow in the footsteps of Vick, Clarett et al? Flag Abuse
Posted by: The Dude Abides at Mar 19 Other opportunites? Like the one he was pursuing when the cops pulled him and his buddy over with two bags of crack? Those kinds of opportunities? I really wish we'd stop recruiting thugs. I'd be content with VT being off the sports page... if its players could also stay off the police blotter. Flag Abuse
