Sniper fire riddled four vehicles heading westbound on I-64 in Virginia near Charlottesville around midnight last night.

Two occupants in the cars were injured in the shootings, but both have been released from local hospitals.

Police authorities shut down a 20-mile stretch between Charlottesville and Waynesboro while they investigated the shootings. According to news reports, witnesses said the sniper attacks were at mile marker 114 at Ivy, and also an overpass near Afton.

Two vans, a car and a tractor-trailer were hit with the bullets. Police told the Associated Press that the bullets all appear to be of the same caliber, but cannot confirm so until after forensics testing.

Police are unsure whether they are searching for one sniper, or if there were possibly multiple shooters, according to news reports.

These shootings echo similar attacks in the DC area six years ago when John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized the beltway killing ten people and injuring three.

Drivers are told not to avoid 64 entirely, but to drive with caution, Col. Steven Flaherty of the Virginia State Police told the Associated Press.
