Apartment fire on Giles Road

At approximately 8:15 p.m. last night, Blacksburg Police, Fire and Rescue responded to 1301 Giles Road Apartment B due to a fire inside the residence, according to a press release from the Blacksburg Police Department.

The fire was contained to an upstairs bedroom and was quickly extinguished.  A box of lighters stored underneath a bed was identified as the initial cause of the fire, Blacksburg Fire concluded from their initial investigation. At this time, it is unknown how the box of lighters was ignited, the release said.

The resident, Erika Bewell, 28 year old, along with her two children, a 2 and 5 year old, were home at the time the fire began.   All three made it out of the apartment unharmed.  Ms. Bewell was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by Blacksburg Rescue.  The children did not require medical treatment, according to the release.

Damage to the apartment is estimated at $15,000.  There was no damage to adjoining apartments, according to the release.
