"I told the guys in there to wish him well," head coach Frank Beamer said following the Hokies' 16-14 loss to Miami on Thursday night. "He's done great for us and he deserves the opportunity."
Foster has served as the Hokies' defensive coordinator since 1995, receiving national praise and accolades along the way.
His unit has been ranked in the top ten overall in total defense eight times .
They were ranked the nation's best in this category in 2005 and 2006 – the year Foster won the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach in the nation.
Last season, Tech finished third in scoring defense – allowing just over 16 points per game – and fourth in total defense. They also led the Atlantic Coast Conference in six defensive categories.
The Tigers, coached by Tommy Bowden heading into the 2008 season, were predicted by many to win the ACC. However, they got out of the blocks slowly, losing to now-No.1 Alabama in the opener and starting 3-3.
Bowden resigned Oct. 13 following a 12-7 loss to Wake Forest four days prior.
Assistant coach Dabo Swinney, who replaced Bowden on an interim basis, is still a possibility to take over full-time. The Tigers are 1-2 during Swinney's short tenure.
The Tigers are also showing interest in a number of candidates. Over the past two weeks, former Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin and current Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables have been interviewed by the school.
Foster was under consideration from West Virginia last year when their head coaching position became vacant.
