The East stands and stadium woods.
It’s not over yet.
Proponents of saving Stadium Wood’s have a new battle on their hands. This time, it deals with parking.
For several years, Virginia Tech football players have been parking in Stadium Woods, on top of the roots of the old-growth trees.
Despite the high publicity of Stadium Woods, the athletics department and Parking Services are still allowing football players to park in the woods.
“This year we asked about this location in particular, in light of stadium woods being as high profile this year,” said Tom Gabbard, the associate director of athletics. “We were granted permission to park there from Parking Services,” he said.
Stadium Woods, the 14 acre grove of white oak trees on campus, has been under intense scrutiny since last year when the athletics department was eyeing the woods as a possible location for a new football training facility. The university denied the proposal after they received thousands of emails, phone calls and petition signatures in favor of saving the woods.
Rebekah Paulson, director of Friends of Stadium Woods, wants the athletic department to take into consideration the damage that’s occurring when cars are parked over the roots.
“I think they are mad, and don’t want to back off any further then they’ve already been told to do,” she said.
By definition, old-growth trees are trees that haven’t been touched by European settlers. They can live to be 700-800 years old and are characterized by the unique habitat they create.
Tech is the only university in North America that has an old-growth forest on its central campus.
Paulson is upset by the lack of care for the trees.
“Athletics, the administration, and facilities department doesn’t care whether the trees are hurt or not,” Paulson said.
Friends of Stadium Woods distributed flyers at the last home game, and spent time personally talking to the football players who park there. The football players expressed that they were only parking there on orders from the athletic department.
“We needed a place for the team to park that’s convenient,” Gabbard said.
He says they have no plans for moving the players' cars at this time.
The location, which is only used for football player’s parking, is occupied by the team the night before a home game, and through all the activities that takes place the day of the game.
A version of this article appeared in the Oct 4 issue of the Collegiate Times.

So the school won't hear the plan until the football season is over and the football players will still be able to park in the woods, how convenient. Let's stop treating football players like MVPs, at least until they can stop losing against second-rate teams.

How/Why was it Parking Services' call to allow cars to be parked in Stadium Woods?

Cause they make parking decisions on campus. In fact it's in their title there... Parking Services. Who else would they possibly consider consulting?!

So much for being a Tree Campus USA. This is disgraceful...

This issue has nothing to do with whether the team is winning or losing. However, it is another example of policy decisions made for the convenience of athletes and the department regardless of the general policies of campus (ie, they get special parking privileges, tutors that other students who are involved with other demanding student activities don't get, etc.)
The community does need to stop the harsh tones when our teams lose. They are students and someone must always win and lose a game. This is a form of internal poor sportsmanship that needs to stop. It was really bad with Sean Glennon and made me sick of many Hokie fans.

Here's a novel idea, next time the state mandates budget cuts, let's cut out all things forestry. That way these ignorant tree-huggers will be forced to move on. You idiots already won the battle, why must you insist on continuing to make fools of yourselves?

There are 850 grass plants/ sq ft that create immensely more oxygen than the 3-4 trees that they are parking. That is all.

I still think we should chop em trees down. Football team brings in big $$$.

This issue is a waste of university time, money and effort....after spending time reading and commenting its a waste of my time and money as well

Given that the forestry industry in the Commonwealth generates $27.5 billion annually and accounts for 144,000 jobs (per the Va. Dept. of Forestry), I think the GA would be far more interested in funding the Forestry Department than in slashing its budget.

Beamer should just send Limos to pick up and drop off the football players. No need for them to drive.

Here is an idea for those who worship football: let's give the players parking spaces that don't drop acorns/branches all over their shiny new cars?
Wouldn't both parties win?
Also, the term "ignorant tree-huggers" is quite amusing. If you think the state is going to cut all things forestry from the budget, you are the ignorant one.

Clearly, this isn't a "football v environment" argument. This is simply a call for parking services to do what is right for the football players and stadium woods. We cannot pride ourselves as a university on our sustainability progress (which the university LOVES to get press about) if we aren't respecting something so rare and important in our community.

You Chokies are a bunch of heartless tree killing rednecks. How can you sleep at night know you are killing some trees with your parked cars!! I'm going to key the next car of any Chokie I see, even if they are an elderly or infirm Chokie. We, the enlightened naturalists, will show you not to compact the soil!

Surely we can't make them park on the practice field it might damage the 3 week old grass. Just be happy you have your little forest for now.

So because they're the only organization with the word "parking" in their name, they have total authority? Pretty sure when they built the parking garage, somebody required an environmental impact study. Besides, the woods area is not an obvious "parking lot." What do you think would happen if they told people they could start parking on the drillfield without consulting anyone else?

Is there really any other student group that is as demanding as athletics? Can you imagine missing all days of school but two in a week? Because that's basically what the women's soccer team had to deal with this week. On top of that, there are 4 hr practices, 2 hr lifting sessions, therapy sessions, team meetings. You are crazy if you think they do not deserve the tutoring services that are given to them.

Ah....so over this topic. Was on campus for 5 year and never even heard of the 'old growth forest' until the last two years. Lets just knock down another chunk of woods and build a parking deck.

Don't cut down the hardwoods! Especially not old-forest hardwoods!

I agree that an athlete's life is stressful having to exercise and train, but when our kicker can be arrested for felony breaking and entering while robbing two basketball players over a botched drug deal i lose a lot of sympathy. I'm sure that the school didn't help out at all with Jimmy Turk, a frequent lawyer for Virginia Tech basketball and football players who run into sexual harassment, drug, or alcohol charges. Turk is also on the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund board of directors, so there is certainly no connection there.
I just think it is time that we recognize that Virginia Tech values the money and dining halls it can raise off hyping an overrated athletics department. The forest is just one of many things that will eventually be demolished and replaced with a shiny new building or place to stuff your face. Unless this administration starts taking action to preserve the integrity of our academic system and stop participating in the superficial arms race of the "modern" university, we will continue down the road to mediocrity.

Nobody seemed to give a rat's a** about parking on the trees until this whole woods debate came up. The only way the environmentalists are going to be happy is if we rope off the entire woods and look at them from a safe distance. Yes, I understand the woods are an important piece of history. Everyone is going to have to give a little to get a little though. They're still standing but you can't expect everyone to stay clear all the time

Here is the text from Parking Service on parking on grass.
Turf Permits
These permits are issued by Parking Services to vehicles requiring temporary parking on the grass except for construction equipment, loaders, graders, etc. Parking Services’ management shall decide who can obtain a Turf Permit. This permit does not allow parking on sidewalks and plazas. As a courtesy please do not park under trees. Refer to University Policy 5000, Section 2.9.12, point 6 on the internet for more details. There will be a $50 charge per permit for all non state vehicles.
Parking services should be able to enforce the rules. They should at least have "turf permits'...

Once again a news source is publishing something with out all the facts. I work for parking services for the football games and heard directly from the head that it is all an athletics decision. Parking services has tried to find other areas for them to park like the tennis courts, but ultimately the athletic department has authority over parking due to its high profile. If the football team wants something, they will get it.

Perhaps the head made the decision, but he overstepped his bounds. Parking on the grass (on state property) is simply not allowed per the current regulations without prior approval from the agency given authority to regulate said activity.
