Hey Hokies! My name is Christine Terminello and I am so proud and humbled to be representing Alpha Phi on Homecoming Court this year. If you were to tell me three years ago that I was to be on Homecoming Court at Virginia Tech, I would have never believed you.
As a junior in high school looking into universities, I really never knew exactly what I was looking for. I knew I wanted a big school, but wasn’t sure how I would fit in or make a difference with so many people around. I visited Virginia Tech for the first time in April of my junior year…and it was snowing. I distinctly remember saying to my parents, “I thought I was coming down south from Northern Virginia. I don’t know about this”.
So we continued to walk around Johnston Student Center aimlessly looking for Burruss Hall. It was shortly after that it hit me. I belonged here. I had students come up to me and ask my family and I how our day was going, hold the door open for us, and even miss the beginning of class to walk us to the bookstore.
I was so amazed by the sense of community I had experienced in just 2 short days in Blacksburg. I went back to Oakton High School and knew I wanted to go to Virginia Tech. Even all my friends told me I was a Hokie. I found my new home!
When I stepped back onto campus in August 2009 to start my freshman year, I remember feeling so overwhelmed with Hokie spirit and was amazed by the sense of ambition that every student shared. I wanted so badly to become immersed in that Hokie spirit and pride.
From joining Alpha Phi, my sponsoring organization, to welcoming the Class of 2015 as an Orientation Leader, I stepped out of my comfort zone with the motivation of the Hokie Community as my driving force.
In my three years at Virginia Tech, I have been privileged to get involved with amazing organizations and meet many wonderful people. Virginia Tech has given me countless opportunities to reach my full potential as a student, a leader, a friend, and a fellow Hokie.
So thank you, Hokie Community, for shaping me into the person I am today. I feel so fortunate to have had such amazing experiences here at Virginia Tech and I am so excited to celebrate Homecoming and its many traditions with the entire Hokie Nation!
