Update (6:00pm): The Blacksburg Fire Department confirmed that the generator in use was the cause of the fire. The generator was operating a short distance away from the house, with a power cable running into the basement of the home. The fire began at the socket where the generator was connected.
The fire caused approximately $83,000 worth of damage to the home.

A house in Montgomery County was damaged by fire this morning.
Firefighters responded to the home on Old Fort Road at approximately 10:45 a.m. Crews worked for over an hour before the fire was extinguished.
According to the Blacksburg Fire Department, no one was home at the time, but a dog was inside the house. The dog did not survive.
The house was in a part of Montgomery County that did not have power at the time. The fire started near a generator that was in use. No statements have been released about the official cause of the blaze.

No, someone should teach them not to leave a generator running without supervision. Thats essentially rule #1 when operating a generator.

Rule #2 is properly connecting it to your house.
(Rule #1 is don't run your generator inside... you would think that's obvious, but people do it anyway.)
I bet the household in-wall wiring wasn't up to the task for supplying the house with its demanded current.
