On Sunday night, the Virginia Tech alert system was the ultimate troll. It pulled the ultimate bait and switch on the student body by canceling school on Monday, and then all but saying, “Just kidding LOL” 20 minutes later.

This isn’t news to anyone, though; Facebook and Twitter more than told the story for anyone who wanted to hear it — people were pissed.

Watching my news feed during that time span was easily the most fun I’ve ever had on Facebook. Seeing statuses go from, “School’s canceled! Let’s rage!” to a long list of expletives made my study session at the Math Empo far more amusing.

Speaking of which, being at the Empo that night was an experience unlike I’ve ever had there. One moment, I was sitting there studying for a test the next day, and all of a sudden the dull murmur of sorority girls and fraternity guys (let’s be honest, the Empo is pretty much a giant social hour for Greek life before about midnight — myself included) turned into a buzz of everyone talking and people packing up.

Within that next 20 minutes, I’d say 25 percent of the students there left; for most of them, TOTS was calling their name. Hell, I had been there for all of about 10 minutes and even I was thinking about the idea of drinking hurricanes in celebration of Sandy canceling class.

Then it happened; the girl next to me gave a very confused look and said, “Wait, it says on the VT website that classes are open now. So which is it?”

And then Facebook blew up.

“You can’t un-cancel school!” they said. “Let’s boycott classes!” they suggested. You’d think the administration was ruining a tradition like sneaking into the north endzone.

Wait … they’re doing that too? Crap!
