World Regions professor John Boyer’s campaign to integrate his Plaid Avengers comic book into an online application has successfully come to a close.
Boyer is known for being an innovator in using alternative learning forms and applying them to his global world regions class.
His latest venture is the creation of a comic book series and accompanying app where his alter ego, the Plaid Avenger, takes on the Mexican drug war.
The mission of the online app is to explain the relationship of the United States and Mexico in a mode that reaches out and involves students while still including Boyer's signature quirky content and visuals.
Boyer has raised money for the webpage via Kickstarter, an online tool to help innovaters raise funds for projects. His website calls this the “future of education.”
The venture is completely non-profit, with all proceeds going directly to the creation of the comic-book and app. Funds raised by sales go straight back into development, design and creation. Boyer will not make any money from sales.
Along with Boyer, a small team works voluntarily to help make production possible. Pledges from $5 to $5,000 were invited on their website, with each level of donation earning a different “comic package.”
For instance, those who donated $20 got the app, the print edition of the comic once released, a Plaid Avenger sticker and a listed name on the thank you page. The eight donors who gave more than $400 will be featured in the comic book.
At the close of the donation period on Nov. 11, 579 backers had pledged $23,181, surpassing the $20,000 goal.
“Overwhelming support from the Kickstarter community will assuredly put us over the top in terms of motivation, materials and labor,” Boyer said. “We are all so inspired to see our ideas become a reality.”
Boyer’s World Regions class pulls in thousands of students a year, most of whom are already aware and supportive of his Plaid reputation.
“I donated a small amount because I believe the project will take off,” said freshman World Regions student Bingying Lin. “I’ll be getting an original copy of the comic book before it becomes a big success story.”
Boyer's students can have more to expect from the class next year, where the comic book and app will be integrated.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if his app and videos went viral on the internet,” said freshman World Regions student Jack Madden. “His ideas are fresh, and the global issues are relevant to everyone.”
With the success of fundraising, the next step for Boyer and his team is to live up to the creative touchstone established by the first two Plaid Avengers editions.
With the writing complete and illustrations in process for the comic, the biggest hurdle will be the iPad app. The team has never created an app before, but is, according to Boyer, well-equipped for the coding and production that the project requires.
“We are on strict deadlines to finish before January 2013 for the comic and in March for the app,” Boyer said. “Deadlines we most certainly will meet.”
A version of this article appeared in the Nov 13 issue of the Collegiate Times.

At what point does one get sick of the cult of Boyer? World Regions yeah it's a fun class and informative but it can be a pain. The events the quizzes etc. have to do to have a certain number of points is annoying. Also, purchasing the textbook and other class materials is annoying too. His class isn't worth anyone way tie. this is just an excuse to entertain his ego.

I completely agree with anonymous. I am so sick of hearing about Boyer. He really is not that cool.....

Ummm.. For what class are you not required to earn a certain amount of points or percentages? Just because you are lazy, doesn't discount Boyer as a professor. He does what many other professors do - has quizzes, exams, papers, and adds in other out of class activities. The beauty of this class is that you choose to do what you want instead of being required to do everything.

You were probably one of the idiots that managed to pull a "C" in his class by being lazy.

Boyer is a fantastic professor. I took his WR class Fall semester last year and I learned more about international politics than I have ever before in one semester. Discrediting what he does is unfortunate. He does an amazing job of engaging students in a comedic way that keeps everyone zeroed in on his main points.

Using a textbook for a college class?? Quizzes to test knowledge?? That is madness!! How dare he use informative materials to instruct a group of students. That learning thing really is super annoying.
Perhaps you, 3rd year student, should consider picking up a textbook of your own and improving on your grammar skills. Best of luck.

I'm shocked he was able to raise so much capitol from body that generaly doesn't volunteer time much less money. This says a lot about his impact on his students. In regards to his course being a "pain", what is described is what would be expcted of any student in any class. His class has an absolute work to benefit ratio very much tipped to the students benefit. Notice the person complained about the work, not the content. interesting.

Wow, can you imagine a teacher that would make you take quizzes and buy a textbook!? The balls of the guy to give you the option to watch the class from your room, and pick which quizzes you want to take. It is obnoxious that this guy lets you learn in the way that works best for you. Long story short, if you have a problem with his class, it is probably because you did poorly in it, and there is no excuse for that besides being lazy and stupid.

This class is amazing and professor Boyer is one of the few professors who can not only teach but also entertain at the same time. With professor Boyer, learning the class material is fun and easy because you are getting involved with the activities that you like (like commenting, watching movies, reading, quizzes, giving an interview. It is a shame that some students blame their laziness and lack of skills on such a great professor like Mr. Boyer! I wish we had more professors like that. When education becomes a hobby it is a great gift that educators can provide for their students. Because of professor Boyer, I learned and understood what is happening in the world. I developed a habit to read about world events daily (Economist, WSJ) and make connections. I feel sorry for people who do not feel that this class was beneficial for them. They lost an opportunity to develop themselves globally, to get involved in the world events and to be more open to the world.

Sorry, I am a 3rd year graduate student who has worked with him before. Didn't go to undergrad here and he doesn't teach graduate level classes. SO nope didn't get a C, but still think he is not that cool and annoying.

I wouldn't say I'm "shocked" at the ability to raise this much money. Everyone should realize that Boyer makes such an impact that some of us, who had the class as far back as 2001, also donated to the cause.
When many of today's students were learning how to not wet their Pull-ups, Boyer was fielding questions about the 9/11 attacks on a panel with several faculty PhDs and seasoned military personnel. He was self-described as "the weakest link" on the panel. Subsequently he rearranged the course materials to basically teach a whole semester on what lead up to the attacks. All of this in the wake of the first terrorist attack on US mainland cemented his lifelong admiration by many students.

I can't believe someone this lazy and unmotivated has learned to spell. I'm not surprised they have trouble insulting a professor through text.

While I do admit the Professor Boyer is not my favorite, his teaching methods are extremely effective and fair. I took World Regions when he still used percentages and there is no reason that any one should have failed, with the quizzes being open book and open video and his telling you the exact questions for the test. All you had to do was show up. I took his wine class on the points system and found that this method was even better. Being able to pick what I did for my grade kept me motivated an interested. If you are not doing well in his class, it honestly is not his fault. He does everything to make sure that there are plenty of opportunities available. Professor Boyer, Keep on keepin' on and don't let lazy, undedicated, unmotivated students bring you down.

If you somehow found Boyer's classes/teaching unpleasant, have fun getting eaten alive in the rest of college and then dropping out. World regions is informative, entertaining, and easy. The fact that you would have any complaints about it says a lot about you.

John Boyer will be making a trip, in order to show appreciation to all the NoVA moms that indirectly supported the project. This will cost Loudoun County Police Department twice the projects funding, in order to police the Boyermania that is sweeping the gated communities.

I've never taken a Boyer class (I'm a senior). Never been interested in him.
He seems like an attention whore who is also apparently a good and effective teacher. So hey, why not kill two birds with one stone?
I don't mean that as an insult to him or anyone who likes him; just ain't my cup of tea.

Boyer's best class is Geography of Wine, that is the best class I've taken in my life, and I wouldn't even put World Regions in the top 5.
