Police were called to the scene of a fight to the 500 block of Hunts Club Road in the Terrace View Apartment complex on Tuesday evening.
Neighbors didn’t report hearing anything, and were surprised when Blacksburg police officers knocked on the door to collect statements.
“All I know is that I was upstairs on my computer, heard a knock at the door, came down, and there was a police officer,” said Nick Grippen a junior computer science major that lives next door to the house in question.
“I heard nothing out here. They had four or five officers, and one of them had a shotgun. They said there was a fight, and someone had reported it.” Grippen said.
Crime scene photographers took photos of the apartment door, as six cops huddled around the scene of the alleged fight.
As of 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Blacksburg Police had not yet issued a public report and Virginia Tech Police had not issued a VT alert. VT alerts are used “when the Virginia Tech Police Department or university administration determines there is an immediate threat to the university community,” according the VT alert webpage.
Terrace View leasing office said that until they receive an official police report, it isn’t able to make an announcement to the community.

Even if something did happen, since it was off campus a VT Alert wouldn't have been issued. Had it been a fight on campus, there still wouldn't have been a reason to issue an alert unless it was very serious, such as a gun being used and the shooter was still at large.
This just sounds like Carol Lee was closed, leaving Blacksburg's Finest with time on their hand and no pop bottle bombs to be found.

VT alerts actually ARE issued for off campus incidences. If a shooting happened off campus, they are required to alert the community. Kinda like if a STABBING occurred off campus (like was suspected here) and someone is still on the lose, they would issue a VT alert.

The neighbor said it was a stabbing. There were crime scene photographers. Obviously it was serious.

No, VT alerts are not just sent out when something happens nearby. An alert would be issued only if there was reason to suspect that the suspect would head to campus. I can assure you that fights and sexual assaults happen off campus all the time. There is no reason to issue an alert every time something happens. That only causes panic and desensitizes people to real dangers. An email would be acceptable, but there isn't a reason to call parents, and send text messages every time a crime is reported. The university has no requirement to notify unless there is a reasonable suspicion that the campus is in danger. If you want to know about every incident that happens, buy a police scanner.

Cops in the burg these days are over cautious. I can understand with the shooting, an the cop getting killed last year. But six cops at a "reported" fight? We have to many cops these days

You can't be too cautious as a cop. Most people argue that a few of them at one scene is fine because they all have guns but they obviously can't pull them unless a life is in danger. Better safe than sorry.
