I hate Thursday night games.
There. I said it, and I'm glad we don't have a Thursday night game this fall.
It's not that I hate football, but when every single student, season ticket holder and tailgating enthusiast descends upon campus, the day becomes nothing short of a drag.
The buses become delayed and crowded, out-of-towners pull up past the white line at the red light on Roanoke Street so the Harding Ave. bus can't make a right turn, and students show up late to the skip-or-fail class with their sobriety in question. Please, just exit.
I am sure there are others like me. I bet right now, scores of students are secretly sending complaints to VT Confessions about how they can't park, how they need to prep for lab but not watching the game means ostracization, or saying that they are cadets with no time already and now they have to sit through an entire game in the middle of the week. Not to mention all of the non-traditional students and staffers who need to worry about childcare.
It's just a hassle. A semi-fun, 63-percent-enjoyable hassle. It's like getting stationary for Christmas. Yeah, you needed new "thank you" notes, and these aren't bad-looking, but it's just ... eh.
Don’t get me wrong; I like watching the game and nothing beats the atmosphere of Lane Stadium on a Thursday. I just very strongly prefer games on Saturdays.
Thursday is still during the week and I have other obligations. The games are just tiring. Why not a Friday night game? Or a Saturday night? Even a Sunday night would be better because nothing happens on Sundays. Anything but Thursday.
I know, I know, real Hokies live for night games. Whatever. Bring on the anonymous comments.

I have literally never heard this complaint before, and I haven't been out of school all that long. Is this what's happened to our school spirit? It makes me sad that you don't love Thursday night games, and even more sad that there may be more students who agree with you. I'm not sure how our school let you down in this way, that you don't love Hokie football and tailgating any day of the week, but I am truly sorry. I guess we had obligations, too, but since it usually only happens at home once a season, maybe twice, it was worth rearranging. Try to enjoy the next one - you'll miss them when you're gone.

Yes, let's make this about her falling into the stereotypical girls-don't-understand-sports thing. Congrats on holding yourself back from adding in a comment involving women and kitchens, you class act, you. You've helped us all to see what being a "real" Hokie is about - only liking one thing and being praised for following one lifestyle. We definitely don't accept people of all interests, races and opinions here at our university, especially when tragedy after tragedy has shown us the danger in that attitude.
How about you take your intolerance and name-calling and take it to UVA? A real Hokie isn't about any of that.

Same commenter as above - lemme add that I've met kids from UVA who are more respectful of Hokie traditions (like football AND respect) than you are.

1) Never said girls dont understand sports. Hence why I mentioned that she probably was from somewhere that doesnt have American football. If she was then would she really suggest playing college games on Sunday? Any person who even remotely knows anything football related knows that Sunday is NFL. So yes, please tell me how I am segmenting out the whole female sex.
2) I am BEYOND glad that you understand how respectful I am of hokie traditions. Because I really was showing disrespect for some good ole traditions with that post. Lets see, I disrespectedddd which ones? Exactly.
You have assumed a mighty amount from a single post. But glad you have. Really opened my eyes to so many new ideas. FYI I am a girl. Thanks!

I dont particularly enjoy football of any kind but the Thursday night game is a tradition and it only happens once a year, its not a weekly inconvenience for you all season long. You could say the same thing about relay for life or the Victoria's Secret party we had it does make the traffic and stuff kinda suck but its fun and really keeps the community together. The Thursday night game is an institution here, and shouldn't be changed.

I love football. I love Tech. But at the end of the day I work in Blacksburg and live in Christiansburg, my kids were getting half days in school for Thursday Night Games. It is ridiculous that their day of learning gets cut short. Classes get canceled on campus because of parking arrangement. It's excessive. The logistics of Thursday night games is not worth it in my opinion. The students are not the only residents in the county. These games create traffic that slows down life in the area. Eat Local, Shop Local. Have a little consideration for locals. Thanks.
Reply to this Top
Its ridiculous that your kids single day in a year gets cut short for a college tradition? Good point. That whopping 2.5 hours is REALLY going to be a difference maker.
Reply to this Top
This is one of 13 half days and a number of teacher workdays. It adds up. Thanks for your analysis though.
Top
Soooooo shouldnt you be complaining to the school about the half days? VT caused one of those last year...not 13. Oh and VT didnt cause the teacher work days either. Stay on topic. Next it'll be VT's fault that your kids have too long of a winter break.
Top
are you serious?! eat local, shop local?! the locals wouldn't survive without the ridiculous cluster of fans that flock to bburg and spend money on booze, food, and fan paraphernalia. poor excuses for having sand in your vag. bburg is getting soft.

You obviously have a very low football I.Q. for one. Games are not played on Friday or Sunday night due to high school and NFL. We won't play on Saturday night this year at home due to our weak home schedule and the fact Jim "dream" Weaver likes noon kick offs. You should probably stick to watching the games on tv until you're ready to fully commit yourself to being a fan.
Reply to this Top
This isn't totally accurate. There are Friday night college games, and the ACC will actually be playing them soon. But they couldn't be added this year due to TV contract restrictions.
Reply to this Top
No duh there are games on Friday, I'm saying we don't play then because that's when a lot of recruits, kids of alumni and so forth play and it isn't in our best interest. Virginia Tech just doesn't play on Friday nights plain and simple.
Top
Well there's a good chance VT will be playing a Friday night game in the near future. For years ESPN had a contract with the Big East for Friday night but now it's coming to the ACC. It has nothing to do with recruits or kids of alumni or whatever you're talking about, it's about television contracts. And why would it not be in our best interest to play Friday night but okay to play Thursday night?

You can't argue eat local shop local and say you don't want a Thursday night game. As an employee of a small business in the Blacksburg area, Thursday night games are some of the biggest business we receive.
Reply to this Top
I wasn't arguing for eating or shopping local while I do support those concepts. Profit over people I guess. I was arguing for consideration. Not EVERYONE who lives here is a football fanatic. It may not be the majority. I get that. I also understand that many students are too hungover to function Friday after Thursday night games. There are a number of valid reasons other than "tradition" and "fun" that make this decision sensible.
Reply to this Top
We could be too hungover to attend class for a variety of reasons on any Friday morning, we're college students and Thursdays are big night for going out at least we're showing our school spirit at a Thursday night game. How's this for consideration? We live here and we learn here too. This is also our home and our place of work. We don't choose how local officials do things any more than we can choose how university official do things. Without us, alumni and fans you wouldn't hardly have these towns to live and work in. We stimulate this economy.

This is just part of the bigger problem. Students that expect a winning program without doing their part to support the team and create an atmosphere---a Thursday night atmosphere that the Hokies have always been praised for. I weep for the future of our football fans if this editorial represents the feelings of other students on campus today. Buck up. Prioritize.

It pains me that someone does not have a passion for the university that they attend.
I understand that once a year, you are inconvenienced by the opportunity to showcase our passion and pride for Virginia Tech. Once a year, the nation is able to tune in to a single college football game on ESPN. That once a year, on a Thursday night, we are able to fill Lane Stadium and show the country what the pride and spirit that we have has Hokies.
The complaints you logged about students and cadets, having an internal dilemna to attend or be ill-prepared for class or other obligations seems to be a personal mismanagement of their own time. It is March 1st. The football schedule beginning in at the end of August has already been published. If you are unable to account for an event that is scheduled at least 7 months in advance, it seems to me that you have lost your right to complain about your workload and the "unneccesary burden" that these games have placed on you.
We have an athletic director that makes decisions based on how much money can be made for the athletic department. Taking a game out of Blacksburg to play in Atlanta surely isn't making any money for the town, but is drawing a pretty penny for the athletic department.

As an editor, it is your responsibility to do due research in preparing your writing. Trying to suggest that nothing happens on Sunday is not true. Nothing may happen in your world on Sunday, but every Sunday during the football season, the NFL happens. TV and money dictate the schedule, and the NCAA and the NFL have an agreement that Saturday's belong to college and Sunday's belong to the NFL.
One day. One Tradition. One passionate fan base. You have 364 days to yourself. Sorry if this one doesn't fit your schedule.

There is a direct correlation to the success of the football program at VT to the number of applications to the university and the average SAT and GPA of those applicants. VT football has had a large role in the improvements to our school. Perhaps you should get over yourself.

Since you decided to open a can of worms
Do you attribute the number college applications to Vick and the early 2000's?
Does VT not have a great engineering program?
Is VT not a top research university?
If you would like to cite the statistics that is fine
However, just a warning looking at VT breakdown of demographic groups and student enrollment, a certain segment of the student population (undergraduate and graduate) has declined since the early 2000's
while other segment(s) are growing and are constant
Do you want a hint?

Well. Where exactly should I begin?
You argue about delayed bus routes, yet do you know that graduation can cause just as much of a hassle? If you have problems with the BT transit system, you can walk. Blacksburg is small enough to get anywhere by foot.
College football is meant to be played on Saturdays. I can agree with you there. However; due to a number of factors outside of control, if we're playing on Saturdays, it's going to be a game that most likely starts at noon due to the level of our competition, success of the team, etc. You'd rather have a noon game over a night game? If so, you're definitely in the minority.
I understand that many folks may not be as passionate about football as the rest of us, but if you're complaining about a game being "tiring," I BEG YOU to PLEASE give your ticket to someone else who cares more. Individuals such as yourself that most likely see games as social events rather than defining Hokie moments are also the reason that the Virginia Tech home field advantage has truly become a joke over the past few years. If it takes time out of your schedule, so much that you bother writing an article about it, don't go. Give your ticket to someone that will actually add to the Stadium atmosphere, rather than just enjoy the atmosphere created by others.

"Why not a Friday night game? Or a Saturday night? Even a Sunday night would be better because nothing happens on Sundays."
Friday night is when high school football plays. Given that one of our goals is to increase visibility to high school football players, this is counterproductive. Not to mention that traveling fans would still have to spend a work day traveling, so this does nothing to address the travel challenges for out of town fans, thus is an awful idea.
We would all love a Saturday night game. Unfortunately, VT cannot request this time slot; this is prime time slot, and TV networks will put the most attractive game of the weekend here. Unless we are that game, it won't happen.
On Sunday night, our team would have to compete with the $9 billion/year entity known as the NFL. I'm sure our visibility would skyrocket if we played then (hopefully everyone could catch my sarcasm there).
While I understand that Thursday night games can be a hassle, please do your research before posting such an ignorant editorial. You failed to recognize both the tradition behind Thursday night games, and the contractual obligation between universities and TV networks.

Anonymous comments are for people that don't believe you are not a real Hokie. Go back to college up on the hill where they think they are better than a state school because it costs more money to attend.
You aren't afraid to get negative feedback about your thoughts. All the power to you. You don't like Thursday night football games. Fine. However, your belief that something so Hokie as a Thursday night football game is a "drag" points out indisputably that you should not have come to Virginia Tech. Your thoughts would be better wasted at a liberal arts school. I hear that U of R is still accepting transfers.

Ben, you sir are an idiot. While most of the general population of students at VT may be from NOVA or other parts of VA they are not all white and rich. I don't know if you go to VT or not but to imply that something as special as being a part of community and having school pride is similar to a cult is just disrespectful. VT has an amazing fan base and if you look at schools all over the country that have great football programs those schools have dedicated fan bases too. It's part of college and that cult mentality as you say fuels the economy of small college towns everywhere. Without fan support were would our football program be? If the fans, cult as you call it, weren't here the program would not make money, would not promote the school, would not attract professors to give the school the academic reputation that we do have.

If you can't manage your time when you know it will be busy, then you probably are doing something wrong.
If a student prepping for lab can't find parking then they should have taken a bus/bike/walked.
Personal time management and ability to overcome obstacles will be a great skill for you to learn, more important than classes actually.
Say you work in Chicago and the G8 summit shuts down your normal route once a year? Do you panic and fail at all normal work?

This is absolutely ridiculous. I've been to all of the Thursday night games regardless of the situation, whether it be that I had a lab late afternoon or an exam Friday morning. Your arguments about buses and out of towners could be applied to games on the weekends, so you're basically hating on all football games, not just Thursday night. Any football fan would understand the excitement of a Thursday night game. Clearly you are not a football fan. You probably don't care about missing enter sandman, sit down at games from tickets you won from the lottery, and then leave early.

In all actuality, Thursday night games are a hassle. Try driving on I-81 coming back from an out-of-town meeting: the return trip just got 2 hours longer. Yay! I loved the games as a student. Sure, some bozos would come to class half or completely lit, especially afternoon classes after 2pm, but they were few and far between. The biggest problem is traffic. Too many people trying to leave campus, just as hoards of football fans are arriving...not to mention all the local residents running their normal routines.
That said, I lament the loss of the game though, as inconvenient as it is...because we lose out on the best national TV exposure the football program can get. Let's face it, outside of Alabama this year, we have no real opportunity for a national broadcast with the remainder of our schedule. Yippee, we host UNC and Pitt. Hello Raycom regional. We travel to the U, and all 47 of their fans will be in the stands.
If we were replacing the Thursday game with a sure-fire primetime Saturday night nationally-televised game? Sure! That's a solid trade. But, as it is, at least a third of the games this year won't be televised other than on a delay, and the remainder will be local/regional ACC broadcasts, at best, unless someone on our schedule suddenly becomes better and ranked...along with us.
Regardless, VT has to win games this year. Last year was painful to watch...Let's Go Hokies!

Also, when you mention "sending out a text message or a tweet grammar free," you phrased it incorrectly. While I think your intended point was that it's impossible for today's youth to interact with phones or social meda in any way other than the ridiculous text shorthand that the media popularizes (g2g c u l8ter!!!), the structure you ended up going with suggested that all youth do those things with excellent grammar.

For a school of higher education with the stature of VT incompassing rigorous academic programs such as engineering and which prides itself with 'The Principals of Community' it seems some people will always force their viewpoints or beliefs down the throats of those who disagree.
Accept people that are different and have different beliefs and opinions.

Agreed!!!!
so many people on campus that do not like football!

Totally agree - except that all football games suck - if you are not a member of the team trying to win the game, then why do you care who is winning. "Fans" have done absolutely nothing to support a win/loss. Get over it already - its a university - we are here to study and work and not to watch other people play games. Get out and play yourself

Looks like you made the wrong choice for a university then. There's a reason that 100 million Americans watch the Super Bowl every year. It's the same reason that people here go out on weekends and the same reason anyone does anything for fun. If you can't balance having fun and studying, you probably shouldn't be here. I wouldn't expect someone like you to understand why people enjoy watching others participate in sporting events, but maybe you should try it sometime. It will help you chill out.

A guy who actually likes football @ 8:44 PM & Anonymous @ 8:48 PM
You have just proven why people can't be themselves.
Demeaning someone does not advance your agrument esp. @ 8:48
I really hope you keep all this hate and vitorol with you and see how far you get in life.
You may just get away with it here; at VT and at the workplace in 'the real world'
Again what might be "fun" for you may not be "fun" for everyone.
Please stop

A guy who actually likes football
That is nice and all but are you really comparing VT football to the NFL?
Remember when the Detroit Lions were 0-16?
Yeah I am pretty sure that they could have beaten this Virginia Tech team especially this year
VT does not and is not nationally promient
When you lose to Alabama for your first game
Get back at me

People have still not answered my question
Where on the college application to Virginia Tech does it say people have to like football?
Where on the application does it say that I have to agree with everyone and conform to a certain lifestyle because my current lifestyle is not 'popular'?
Should I completely change who I am just to please a certain group of people?
I thought college was part of growing up and discovering who you are (along with adolescence/ puberty)
As a young adult we are to learn from our mistakes.
I go out almost every weekend and bar crawl (DT)
However, I don't make fun of those that don't partake in my lifestyle by belittling them.
Maturity goes a long way into getting people to respect you.
I really hope that this is just limited case to VT but I am afraid not as some people commenting on this article will clearly never grow up.
You maybe 'grown up' in a sense (biologically) that you have fully developed breasts, pubic & body hair, increased penile size, increased sex drive, increased height, etc.
However, you level of maturity is that of a child that has to reduce someone by calling them names.

The only reason this article was written was because the CT is suffering as a paper financially. They needed an article to get people to their site and to get people talking about this so they will start reading the paper. The opinion itself is sad and pathetic, but understand it was all money driven because the CT doesn't have any.

The Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech, Inc. (EMCVT) [The Collegiate Times parent company] despite being 'independent' receives $70,000 per year of student fees automatically from the university and free office space in Squires

Nice try Nemo but you are back peddling.
"1) Never said girls dont understand sports.
Exactly"
"Also, the "worst" name I called her was child. OH NO. SO HARSH OF ME. I AM SO RUDE"
"a girl who doesnt fully understand football, probably of oriental descent"
Bravo on you attempt to hide your bigotry

This is split up between 7 groups. The CT relies on their advertising money and it is way down. Why do you think in the past few years they stand outside and hand people their papers? Desperation. And, you walk around on campus on Sunday and see their boxes still full from the paper on Friday. Also you get a green sign in online asking for money. They're hurting, just ask Kelly Wolff.

trust me the vast majority of the student section does not agree with this, its a shame that some of our students are so unenthusiastic about our school and i know a vast majority of students that ive talked to are kind of upset with jim weaver, that said i have also heard that its only a one year thing soooooo see you all next year on thursday night?
Reply to this Top
this is why (some) women cannot do sports. VT should expel her. I cried reading this

I CANNOT BELEIVE ANY HOKIE WOULD EVER SAY THIS! This person should be denied football tickets for the rest of her life. Thursday night games are some of the most exciting and best memories of my 6 years at VT. They are great for Blacksburg ($$$) and the school (nationally televised game). If there's a lot of traffic or full busses, just walk. Blacksburg is not that big. Just about every professor I had would make accomodations for the games. These are just sad, selfish excuses to hate Thursday games and get lots of comments on your article.

Life is a long journey. One Thursday night game out of 365 days/nights in a year should not break anyone...young or old...local or student...I'm an alum, I grew up in Blacksburg since 3rd grade, and I have a career and a family with kids of various school age now so I see this from many angles...plan ahead, lighten up, and appreciate what an event like a Thursday night national game does for VT publicity across the country. Enjoy a little Thursday night football fun and the camaraderie it fosters within the Hokie nation.
It would be nice if Frank Beamer commented on this...I'm still trying understand Weaver's logic...curious to know if Beamer supports it or not...and if he does support it, why? I think Coach Beamer owes it to the Hokie Nation to give a comment on this.
