According to Virginia Tech Police, a student was found dead in Newman Hall Thursday evening.
The student, a male whose name has not been released, was found by an RA who was performing a "welfare check," the police statement said. He had not been seen for about a day.
Police do not suspect foul play or that there is a threat to the community. The Virginia State Police are assisting in the investigation, according to the statement.
Police were notified at about 5:25 p.m. and the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad was immediately notified.
Police are currently notifying next of kin.

Probably because there was no apparent cause for alarm- likely a suicide or overdose- and they wanted to notify the family so they didn't hear about it from the news.
People complain when they send alerts and complain when they don't. Just watch out for yourself- it's the best you can do in an unpredictable world, whether on campus or not.

It was not suicide. Alerts should have been sent out. Its very unlikely a student at Vatech would do that

This is such a sad situation. I can only imagine how terrible this is for everyone involved. As a fellow student and Hokie, my sympathies go out to the family and friends of this person. I never knew him or her but I've seen time and time again that it's almost always true that only the good die young.

The student have died from a health reason, or might have committed suicide. They only send out VT Alerts if they suspect the person was killed. This is a personal situation for the friends and family of the student who died.

The police might not have released the information right away. If foul play wasn't involved, then this is a personal, private matter for the friends and family of the student who died.

According to a Newman resident on Reddit, the guy was diabetic. With that knowledge, there isn't really a reason to send out an alert.

Where on Reddit was this posted? I am the sister of the student and want to see everything i can. We don't know for sure what happened.. it looks like it was diabetes related and an accident.

I love Newman Hall! It was my freshman year dorm and one of the most influential places on Tech's campus for my college career. My heart breaks for the student and also for the RA (I was an RA in New Res following living in Newman) who had to find and respond to this.
Morbid curiosity still wants to know what happened though.

Having a chronic disease such as diabetes does not predispose a college student to abruptly die. Something untoward happened. The reports says "based on what was recovered at the scene" makes them not suspect foul play.

I highly doubt the first priority upon finding a deceased student is to notify the local student newspaper. These are not also reporters on-call or checking email every 2 minutes to break news at all-hours of the day.

Actually, the Collegiate Times business hours run until 10 at night; there were reporters on-call to check breaking news.
