Bryan Baugh, sophomore international studies major, was found dead in his dorm room Thursday night.
Baugh was a member of the a cappella group Tech Notes, he also studied German. He was from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and worked at West End.

"He was a really great guy. He was super funny and he was really passionate about music. I am having a really hard time processing it” said Erin Sanchez, a fifth year Architecture major and fellow Tech Notes singer.
According to Virginia Tech Police, Baugh passed away Thursday night and there is no suspicion of foul play or intentional harm. At this time, the police cannot release any additional information regarding cause of death.
VT News reported that an RA checked his room after Baugh had not been seen for approximately 24 hours. He lived in the second floor of Newman Hall. Virginia Tech Police was notified at 5:25 p.m. for medical assistance and responded with the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad immediately.
There was no VT alert sent to students because there was no evidence that indicated that there was a confirmed, ongoing threat/danger to the community. However, VT News published a short press release on the Virginia Tech homepage later Thursday night.

Did 'they' have to release his name?
What about the privacy of his family and his friends?
Does everyone have to know?
Jesus VT....

He's an adult, names are always released when an adult dies. People have the right to know, especially if they may have known him. I really hope this wasn't a suicide. Rest in Peace Bryan :(

"He's an adult, names are always released when an adult dies. People have the right to know"
Oh really?
Please point this out somewhere
(I know the Clery Act does not say that certainly not FERPA what a joke that is HIPAA? etc.)
People and [that includes students] have a right to privacy
It really is none of our business
Oh don't give me the "VT is a community" BS
It must be nice to give up your "rights" when you set foot on campus
Of course with the prevalence of Facebook and Twitter w/ social media it is no wonder privacy eroded away

A welfare check after ≥ 24 hours?
This is done with and/or without VT Police involvement
No one noticed anything? Not one person on that floor in Newman?
Not his classmates? He wasn't missing
So much for a 'community'
Reply to this Top
He didn't have a roommate. It wouldn't be uncommon for someone to leave their door closed.

Lets not argue about FERPA, or what VT police did or didn't do, or the fact that it was a long time before someone checked on him. Why not stop to pray for this family and his friends. A sophomore in college dying is too soon and very sad. There is a family, a school community and a home community that is mourning this loss.

I couldn't agree more. It's incredibly unfortunate when the untimely death of someone is turned into a battleground for people to push their opinions.

We his family were notified before his name became public knowledge. He didn't have a roommate, which is why no one knew. His death is a tragedy and was no ones fault including his own. There are a lot of people mourning and it is nice to see his friends sharing their memories of him.

I am unsure to what previous posters were talking about thousands of people in someone's business?
I am sorry for your loss @ 1:16 AM

As a parent of one of Bryan's hallmates and friends I would like to express my sympathies. I heard many kind things about this young man. He was a good friend to the underclass men that joined him in Newman this year.
To those that have chosen this as a political stage, shame on you! His family and friends are grieving the loss of someone they loved.
Bryan, was a wonderful young man and he impacted more young lives then he could have ever imagined! Celebrate Bryan's life!

Yeah 'the guilt trip' thing or 'you should be ashamed of yourselves' does not work especially on CT trolls or any non Hokie b/c one "Anonymous" is probably a townie or something
Try to ignore anonymous comments myself included
Honor and cherish
Just let them keep trolling; anonymous is obviously very lonely and has nothing to do with their lives

You all are missing the point
Collegiate Times shouldn't have the responsibility to inform anyone
That responsibility is placed solely on
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Virginia Tech Police Department
Reply to this Top
The CT is the newspaper of record for Tech. Of course it's their responsibility to inform the public of events of note on campus. A student's untimely death is an event worth noting.

Only opportunity here was Collegiate Times running this story for the supposed inside scoop

As a parent of a VT student our family would like to say how sorry we feel for the family. I can't imagine how difficult it is to loose a child. Our hearts go out to you. Our prayers are certainly with you. May God give you peace.

His parents probably signed a waiver allowing them to release his name, so calm down. It's much harder to go through and tell everyone that your son has died then it is for them to all find out at once. From what we've seen/heard, he had a lot of really good friends and it seems an injustice that the parents who are already suffering would have to tell them.

Just trival now but the same Virginia Tech News story was updated

Student privacy / FEPRA expires upon a student's death
We could easily find out how a Resident Advisor & Housing + Res Life handles student death and the procedures involved.
