The Chick-fil-A Kickoff game between Virginia Tech and Alabama in the Georgia Dome sold out on Tuesday.
Both teams completely sold out their allotment of tickets — the dome holds 71,228 fans. The game is set to take place at 5:30 p.m. on August 31.
“This is a nationally compelling matchup with two legendary coaches, passionate fan bases and perennial top-10 teams in the country,” said Chick-fil-A Bowl President and CEO Gary Stokan.
This is the first time since the 2009 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game that the Hokies will face the Crimson Tide. At their last meeting Tech, ranked No. 7, lost to the fifth-ranked Bama, 34-24.
Alabama is coming into the game after winning back-to-back national championships. The Hokies are coming off their worst season in 20 years.
Beating the defending national champions would do a lot to help Tech head coach Frank Beamer’s reputation of losing big games.
Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban is pleased to be a part of the game.
"We are looking forward to another great game and we have a lot of respect for Coach Beamer and Virginia Tech,” said Nick Saban, Alabama head coach.
Beamer is also excited to get a chance to play the Tide.
“The Georgia Dome is always an exciting place to play and a sold out Georgia Dome is going to be very special,” Beamer said. “I think it’s a great atmosphere, and us playing the top program in the country in front of a packed house…that is why you come to Virginia Tech.”
